"the excesses of wokeness" as a broad social phenomenon is one of the most made-up things that ever happened and every single time a progressive person did something obnoxious or mean or stupid it got blown up into evidence of cultural rot, down to individual college students and Goodreads bloggers

The other party is still largely occupied by people who think it is rude to raise your voice too loudly and are more concerned with ensuring that the whippersnappers stay in line and don’t challenge their sagely authority for accepting promises of debating rural healthcare policy.

one thing that's nice about canceling your New York Times sub is every week you get at least one or two stories shared on here that make you say, "yeah, it rocks that I did that, I only wish I could do it again." highly recommend you cancel yours if you haven't already

Virginia state Senator Louise Lucas (a Democrat who is the chamber's president pro tempore) just tweeted this:
Remember when Republicans drew Virginia's Congressional map so Black people were packed into one district and said we should be grateful they gave our community this district. NOW they can have one district and see how much they love it.

the actual story here, which the media never talks about, is that police in this country have become a discrete right-wing political operation. the story isn't about cops leaving (they're lying about that), it's about the police trying to exert influence over elections.

But you shouldn't be too surprised when they say stuff like this: "You were better off being a Black person in Charleston, S.C., in 1850, when they had an operating slave market than being conceived as a Black baby in New York City or Baltimore today."
I don’t want to take any guidance at all from the secular society around us. And the reason I don’t is they killed 60 million babies. I don’t want to hear any more lectures from these people about slavery. You were better off being a Black person in Charleston, S.C., in 1850, when they had an operating slave market than being conceived as a Black baby in New York City or Baltimore today.

Huey Long told Standard Oil they didn’t have to pay taxes if 80% of oil refined in Baton Rouge came from Louisiana Fun fact: Long owned the company which leased state land to oil drillers. Sounds like a real warrior for the people, right?

Huey Long hated unions, was pro child labor (picking cotton was too much “fun”) and anti pensions (black people would have to get pensions too). He opposed anti lynching laws. His philosophy was “a quarter to the white kids and a nickel to the niggers” Sure Gabe, sounds pretty universal to me

The Record Player, 1939
Oil on canvas
The woman in this painting is lost in her thoughts. One strap of her undergarment has slipped from her shoulder. Red light bathes the left side of her face, shoulder, and arm.
The background is dark and cavernous.
No music sounds.
What could account for this ominous tone?
In 1937, Adolf Hitler labeled Karl Hofer and other modern artists "degenerate." Hofer's paintings were confiscated. He was removed from his teaching post at the Berlin University of the Arts and was forbidden to paint. In 1939, Nazi Germany invaded Poland. World War II began. Still, Hofer painted.

This is an underrated part of why Democrats are being stupid. A very significant number have not adjusted to the reality that small donors are a multi-billionaire in aggregate. If you can get them on board, you don't need the cocktail party set. So there's tension between the old ways and the new.
