❄️ A first: no snow at Weissfluhjoch For the first time in 90 years of measurements, there was no #snow cover between July and September 2026 at the #SLF research site (2,536 m). After a hot, dry summer and low-snow winter, glacier snow also disappeared up to around 3,500 m. 📹 Timelapse SLF

In the end, my parents are coming to visit next week so I'll just give them my ballot to mail domestically when they go back to the USA. But thanks for the info

It would be much easier though if Boulder County actually won the case. Normally I would be very pessimistic, but with Alito recusing himself and Roberts appearing neutral, maybe there is a chance? A non-verdict would also be very welcomed www.scotusblog.com/2026/10/cour...

I went to the my local post office here in France to send my mail-in ballot for the USA mid-term elections only to learn that all mail to the United States has been indefinitely suspended!!! Is this a way to disenfranchise the Democrat leaning international vote? What is going on?

Definitely qualifies as a rather intense atmospheric river for West Antarctica. Gets up to an AR2 on the CW3E scale. Impressive how wide the moisture transport is across Amund/Bell sea.

I feel like we've spent the summer being gaslighted by the weather forecast models, at least in the UK and France. I lost track of how often a one-week projection of a trough with cool air and rain ends up getting replaced with a ridge and a heatwave.

5/ A new paper from Wang et al. published in @nature.com now has the answer. They identified a connection between warming in the tropical warm pool near Indonesia and an atmospheric circulation pattern that brings more moisture and storms to East Antarctica

4/ But the question remained why had these extreme snowfall events increased over the past few years. Is a warmer atmosphere now bringing more snowfall to Antarctica and preventing sea level rise for the foreseeable future?

3/ However, while climate extremes have been driving heatwaves, fires, and floods, since 2020, the mass loss in Antarctica mysteriously paused. Kolbe et al. 2026 found that an increase in atmospheric rivers put more snow in Antarctica, balancing out the ice discharge @marlenkolbe.bsky.social

2/ As you may know, the Antarctic ice sheet has been losing mass for a while now from warmer ocean water melting the ice sheet from underneath and causing land ice to flow faster into the ocean

1/ In support of a recently published article in @nature.com on extreme weather in East Antarctica, I wrote a News and Views article summarizing how a recent pause in Antarctic mass loss was being driven by a temporary increase in sea surface temperatures in one region of the tropics. rdcu.be/fAQ8t

The Antarctic ice sheet has gained mass — but probably not for long | Nature
Since 2020, snowfall has largely counterbalanced the melting of the Antarctic ice sheet. The atmospheric effect that causes this has been identified — and it’s temporary.

While still plenty of uncertainty amongst the ECMWF members about the magnitude of the cooling, there is a general consensus between many models about a pattern shift towards less ridging/blocking/heat domes. The point forecasts are for Grenoble.

After the 5th heatwave in France, it looks like a real, genuine pattern change will arrive next week, finally breaking the cycle of record breaking, hellish heat, and then short lived periods of still above temperatures. Most importantly, an Atlantic flow will break much needed rain to France. 1/

The Trump administration hates academic science funding, full stop. They hate where that money goes, and they hate who it goes to. They want to keep all that money for themselves, to hand out to favored cronies who can help them get elected and to steer yet more money and more power back into their hands.

That’s it. That’s the story

But just as there seemed to be hope that by next Thursday the cutoff low would be picked up by a passing trough and replaced with an Atlantic flow regime, the ECMWF now has the cutoff low getting left behind and retrograding back to its favorite position. Thus continuing this hell in Western Europe

Being a meteorologist in France this summer has been a cruel joke. Staring at the forecast models, they always offer hope that the heatwave will end. But they always slide back to a cutoff low off the coast of Portugal leading to a "heat pump" like we are currently dealing with.

France recorded a high of 44.6°C today. That’s so far beyond anything seen in the historical record, a 4.2 sigma deviation from the norm that it gives a return period of 87 thousand years. It’s really difficult to convey just how utterly extreme this is.
