After a nearly month-long plateau Nino3.4 region temperatures (ONI) are on their way back up. We've now surpassed 1982/1983 and are only behind 2015/2016 in terms of maximum daily values. And its only early September.

Interannual variability in global mean temperature is most strongly related to temperatures in the tropics, here shown by correlating detrended global and gridpoint temperatures. There is very little relationship with temperatures over Europe and many parts of Asia.

Since 2020, snowfall has largely counterbalanced the melting of the Antarctic ice sheet. The atmospheric effect that causes this has been identified — and it’s temporary.

Top left is the ERA5 max for March; top right is the maximum predicted in the model over the run out to 360 hrs; bottom left is the difference between the two, and bottom right is the number of 6-hr forecast times that would be above the ERA5 monthly max. It shows broad areas where the 500-hPa height will be more than 50 m higher than previously observed in March, and the entire southwest will spend at least two full days in monthly record territory

🚨 New @oceaniceeu.bsky.social preprint🚨 why has Antarctica stopped (net) losing mass, in spite of increased discharge? Declining sea ice is part of the answer but increasingly heavy and frequent atmospheric rivers are most important factor. Lots of important subtleties: arxiv.org/abs/2510.03590
Screenshot of figures from the paper: Above a graph showing wiggly lines depicting the cumulative mass budget of Antarctica: a dark line swoops and wiggles downwards before stabilising at the end, colourful dashed lines (depicting snow fall) wiggle along constantly before sloping upwards at the same tme stabilisation occurs.

🔭 🧪 ⚛️ #sciart This breathtaking photo by Brent Mckean features a few atmospheric optics phenomena due to refraction, reflection and diffraction of moonlight from millions of falling ice crystals. Image source➡️ apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap20022...
The image shows a celestial spectacle over Manitoba, Canada, on a cold winter morning. The moonlight, refracted, reflected and diffracted by millions of falling ice crystals, creates extraordinary optical phenomena. At the center, the Moon is surrounded by a colored halo, called the corona, generated by the diffraction of small droplets of water or ice. A 22-degree halo is seen around it, formed by the refraction of moonlight through six-sided cylindrical ice crystals. On either side of the moon are "moon dogs," bright spots caused by the refraction of light through thin, hexagonal ice plates floating toward the ground. Above and below the 22-degree halo are upper and lower tangent arcs, created by refraction through nearly horizontal ice cylinders. The sky, captured in three combined exposures, appears surreal, transforming the moon into an icon of another world.

New look at the landscape beneath Antarctica 🇦🇶 Without the 27.17 million km³ of ice. This clearly shows that much the West-Antarctic Ice Sheet is below sea level. That's why it melts rapidly in a warmer climate, like it did ~120,000 years ago during the Eemian interglacial.
