I really don’t know if Burnham’s proposed solutions for social care will be good but I give him immense credit for making it such a centrepiece for his agenda because social care desperately needs all the help it can get. Turns out as PM you can use the bully pulpit.

The usual moral “I’ll support anything as long as the rosette is red” voids in the replies to this. The reality is that Sunak did take real political damage in sacking Braverman and taking the whip from Anderson. Starmer and Burnham both useless on this.

If only there were some legal term for where 12 or more persons who are present together use or threaten unlawful violence for a common purpose and the conduct of them (taken together) is such as would cause a person of reasonable firmness present at the scene to fear for his personal safety.

I loved how the Jimmy Carter presidential museum contained so many examples of peanut related campaigning products. However, they could have made a killing by selling some in their gift shop (primarily from me).

I genuinely cannot understand how the Labour government has now had two, genuinely cultured prime ministers who both looked at Lisa Nandy’s record there and went “I’m pleased with this. I want this to continue.”

Tuchel messed up his substitution in the Norway game by bringing Eze on. The difference there is he used the subs left to rectify his error. Here it was clear by 80 mins that the gamble was not paying off and he still had two changes to introduce an outlet and/or take more midfield control.

I feel like I’m fighting a one man battle against the world but I see no evidence the ball hits the wire. The camera moving plus a bit of back spin gives the appearance of the ball changing trajectory from the main view but there’s zero evidence of any contact other than vibes.

Is Haaland playing against a Man City centre back pairing more beneficial for the defenders or the striker? I suppose they’re both proactive and reactive positions.

Every lifelong football fan I've ever met is like "I think players are supposed to serve their suspension" and every adult convert is like "the Archon of Constantinople's epistle on the Pentacostine rites of the eucharist clearly states handballs are mandatory."

That is how you get written into England folklore. I’m so glad I got up at 4am Armenian time for that. Jude world class, Gordon as a workhouse runner who offered a great outlet, Pickford’s best performance of the tournament, Dan Burn everywhere nullifying Mexico’s crosses. Bring on Norway.

I don’t know what I expected against a Carlos Quieroz side. That man is the bane of my existence. Even when I wanted the team he was managing to win, he terror balls me into frustration.

My friends and family who don’t follow football think I’m being hyperbolic when I talk about Kane as the best player in the world at the moment. I don’t do ifs, buts and maybes, I do absolutes. He is!!!

I don’t know if I’ve been spoiled by Tommy Tuchel’s pressing menaces but Colombia just look so passive. Yes James Rodriguez legs have gone and the altitude has an affect, but they’re certainly good enough to impose themselves more.

My favourite game of the tournament so far. Goes to show it’s often jeopardy more than quality of football that determines its memorability. Rezaien and Wood both superb. Hope the night shifts in the coming days prove to be as quiet to allow me to watch all the early morning games.

Thoroughly enjoying all of Jennifer Williams’ contributions on Burnham. Whether it’s part my ignorance or part the death of local news, but I’d love to know the journalists doing equivalent work for other British cities.

Starmer has set a low bar that surely Burnham will surmount, but nothing suggests to me that he will be good at being prime minister. It’s easy to be popular as mayor, far harder as PM. If he can’t get congestion charging in, how will he deal with Westminster and who will be his Leese and Bernstein?

“It would be unwise to overstate what these results portend for the next general election. Some local votes really are about potholes, not Peter Mandelson.” Yet the reality is that local govt is now so centrally constrained that seems entirely logical that voters would treat as national polls…

As some point dividing up the electorate into little blocs you have to pick and choose between is part of why Labour is in this mess. At some point you just have to make people's lives better. I'm not saying that's easy, but it's not as hard as Labour make it seem either

Our ability to progress the ball from midfield when Curtis Jones is on the pitch versus not on the pitch is night and day. Makes it really difficult to comprehend why he has been used so minimally this season by Slot.

I find it bemusing when people talk about the ‘rules based international order’ as an airy-fairy idealistic thing. The people who built it had just fought and won the bloodiest war in the history of mankind. They were well aware of its imperfections but that didn’t mean it wasn’t important.

As technology’s role in our lives deepens ever further, the greater the capability for these types of targeted attacks. The temptation for this form of warfare is only going to increase and I’m not sure it is a world I particularly want to live in.

In Free Lea Ypi writes of how Albanians would display cans of Coca Cola when the country was first opening up. Found out my mum did something similar, when a uni friend’s mum brought back some instant noodles they kept the plastic packaging as a souvenir never having seen something like it before.

If only there were some kind of useful lesson here about deploying more senior skills in triage outside of strike periods www.ft.com/content/c928...
One hospital boss who did not wish to be named noted that A&E "works so much better when there is a strike" because of more confident decision-making by the consultants.
Another health leader said that, while the strike had carried "significant risk... the impact of having senior decision makers at all points through the hospital means that actually hospitals went into this Christmas with a lower level of bed occupancy than we've seen for years".

I was reminded of Foch's imaginary British soldier.
Extract from Tuchman's Guns of August: "What is the smallest British military force that would be of any practical assistance to you?" Wilson asked.

Like a rapier flash came Foch's reply, "A single British soldier-and we will see to it that he is killed."
