"don't get left behind by ai." by Jane (@janebwriting on IG)
"don't get left behind by ai."

so leave me behind. leave me with the long speech written by ink-stained hands for the best friend dressed in white silk. leave me in art galleries and bookstores and theaters that house decades of ghost stories. leave me with the family photograph where the dad is blinking and the cousin is talking with the aunt and the dog is a blurry smudge. leave me with the typos. leave me deep in the forest with only the hum of the honeybees and the rush of a stream. leave me with the flyer drawn up by a local artist or designed in a rush on canvas or scribbled on a piece of lined paper. leave me with the google search that pulls me down a rabbit hole. leave me on the couch on a tuesday night, white wine in hand, crying "how do i get over him?" to the sister. leave me at the computer, typing an email that takes up only thirty fucking seconds of my time.

leave me behind with the things that make us human.

"Managing Humans" by Rands was one of my favorite books as a new engineering manager, so seeing this is a bummer. If you're using genAI to build your next book and are rage-quitting over watermarks, that means you're hiding your AI usage from your audience. randsinrepose.com/archives/rip...

In the middle of reading a book and noticed one chapter near the end was 1.5h compared to the other 20m chapters. Figured that'd be the big climax with lots of action. Nope, it's a brain dump of world building, presumably setting up the second book. Bleh.

One of the worst parts of this change is how it punishes the loyal monthly subscription customers. They get less V-Bucks each month for their money PLUS the four battle passes they pay for each year give less V-Bucks. It's the equivalent of raising $144/year cost to $200 without admitting it.

After a free preview, Blink wants me to pay $8/month more for AI descriptions of the video clips from my camera. During the preview, the descriptions were always useless (e.g. "a person is walking in the room") and one time scared my wife (it mistook a shadow for a person.) Who asked for this?

Rogue Trader did a really great job of making Ulfar, the Space Marine, feel incredibly tanky next to even my shield-warror. It's rare that a game features an "overpowered" class/species/hero from the lore and they don't end up feeling like a level 1 grunt.

After decades of tech marketing conflating machine learning, LLMs, computer vision and more as "AI" to sell the hype, now those same people are upset when others say "Ban AI". "AI is many things, it's not just genAI!!" You created this confusion for your own benefit. Now you can wallow in it.

Very bizarre line from a @screenrant.bsky.social article: "Connie wasn't technically a member of the Cooper family. She wasn't related by blood to George, but since she lived nearby, she became a staple in the lives" Since when do we not consider the bride's mother to be part of the family?

Perplexity CEO defends their product being "just a ChatGPT wrapper" by saying OpenAI is just an Azure/NVIDIA wrapper. As much as I dislike the LLM hypewave, it's incredibly disingenuous to compare models to services that just use an API to access that model.

There's something absolutely repulsive about a company conducting a round of layoffs, providing all the ex-employees a template to announce their job loss on LinkedIn, and then putting promoting other people FIRST in that template before mentioning that the poster themselves needs a new job.

I really dislike companies that disincentive their customer service reps from actually helping customers, either through policy or metrics. Best Buy just wanted to reschedule our delivery to the 23rd (originally the 13th) As soon as I asked to cancel the order, magically it'll come on the 14th.

Random musing: the fictional personification of user personas and trying to get your company to refer to them by name is counterproductive by harming your ubiquitous language. Fred Fish isn't an engineer's function name, an accountant's QuickBooks code, or a marketer's target segment. Chef is.
