"don't get left behind by ai." by Jane (@janebwriting on IG)
"don't get left behind by ai."

so leave me behind. leave me with the long speech written by ink-stained hands for the best friend dressed in white silk. leave me in art galleries and bookstores and theaters that house decades of ghost stories. leave me with the family photograph where the dad is blinking and the cousin is talking with the aunt and the dog is a blurry smudge. leave me with the typos. leave me deep in the forest with only the hum of the honeybees and the rush of a stream. leave me with the flyer drawn up by a local artist or designed in a rush on canvas or scribbled on a piece of lined paper. leave me with the google search that pulls me down a rabbit hole. leave me on the couch on a tuesday night, white wine in hand, crying "how do i get over him?" to the sister. leave me at the computer, typing an email that takes up only thirty fucking seconds of my time.

leave me behind with the things that make us human.

There's no reason this company needed to spend tons of money on domains to sell licorice, caramels and taffy. Probably explains why their Australian Red is $1.125 per oz while Wiley Wallaby is almost half that at $0.599 per oz.

Such a weird hill for you and Casey Newton to draw the line on, nitpicking the words of an author who knows their life work has been appropriate by this tool and now had to witness an author-focused convention using it. Especially since, if you ask ChatGPT if it's a search engine, it says no.

"Cursor IDE support hallucinates lockout policy, causes user cancellations" And their official response? "Unfortunately, this is an incorrect response from a front-line AI support bot." Plus locking the Reddit thread discussing it. Man, it couldn't have happened to a better company.
Earlier today Cursor, the magical AI-powered IDE started kicking users off when they logged in from multiple machines.
Like, you’d be working on your desktop, switch to your laptop, and all of a sudden you're forcibly logged out. No warning, no notification, just gone.

Naturally, people thought this was a new policy.

So they asked support.

And here’s where it gets batshit: Cursor has a support email, so users emailed them to find out. The support peson told everyone this was “expected behavior” under their new login policy.

One problem. There was no support team, it was an AI designed to 'mimic human responses'

That answer, totally made up by the bot, spread like wildfire.

Users assumed it was real (because why wouldn’t they? It's their own support system lol), and within hours the community was in revolt. Dozens of users publicly canceled their subscriptions, myself included. Multi-device workflows are table stakes for devs, and if you're going to pull something that disruptive, you'd at least expect a changelog entry or smth.

Nope.

And just as people started comparing notes and figuring out that the story didn’t quite add up… the main Reddit thread got locked. Then deleted. Like, no public resolution, no real response, just silence.

To be clear: this wasn’t an actual policy change, just a backend session bug, and a hallucinated excuse from a support bot that somehow did more damage than the bug itself.

But at that point, it didn’t matter. People were already gone.

Honestly one of the most surreal product screwups I’ve seen in a while. Not because they made a mistake, but because the AI support system invented a lie, and nobody caught it until the userbase imploded.

Compared to the previous games, the new model, specifically the horns, is hard to look at. All their foreheads walk into the room a few minutes before they do.

Finished up Dragon Age: Veilguard tonight and don't really understand most of the negative feedback. I found the pacing a bit off -- you'd fight one of the BBEGs and then a companion would invite you to a picnic -- but other than that, it was fine. Except! The Quanari? Who OK'd this model?

I've seen the take that NaNoWriMo shut down because of the AI controversy and not the grooming scandal. In my opinion, that isn't what happened. Tax returns for non-profits run farther behind than you might imagine. NaNoWriMo's tax returns for 2023 were due around October 2024.

Pretty anxious that our eldest #cat isn't feeling well and we don't know why. She's on her second round of blood tests and may have to go back this week for more. On the plus side, her teeth are fine, her liver enzymes are at her baseline, and she has meds for nausea.
