I never put a remake as GOTY, but this 'was' tied for my favorite game of 2023. it's currently on sale for like 11 dollars. @nightdivestudios.bsky.social did a fucking incredible job with this one.

Got this sucker in and can't wait for a re-watch. A movie that never ever has failed to make me laugh and cry. How we all miss Robin Williams. @marawilson.bsky.social was adorable in this as well lol.

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...

“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

With Nevermind turning 35, I've been cranking a bunch of these this week. I tend to prefer rawer, messier Nirvana personally, but it's still a great record.

When it comes to RPGs, when I do something in the game that the scripting doesn't account for, I totally get it because all the permutations have to be 'so' fucking hard to pinpoint in a massive ass game, but it still irks me.

When critics fawned over the Bowie mix of this over the Iggy mix, I really had to question their mental sanity. Bowie was an all-timer artist, but his pathetic shot at trying to tame the raw nastiness of The Stooges was about as fucking lame as it gets.

The Washington Post once got attention by cracking and exposing Watergate. Now, it's going viral with articles about whether you should drink iced coffee at interviews. What a comedown.

So if you've played the Fallout games, you might recognize this cat. Her name is Boomer and my friend Ilya Nazarov did the cat paintings based on my cats. Unfortunately Boomer passed away yesterday. Her brother Galen passed away a few years back. She was a very sweet cat that loved everyone.

As I get older with needing to really spread my time more carefully with games, I've had to really narrow down / pick and choose, and so at my age now, I 'know' my style and genres, and I'd say every genre I've adored since a young lad gets great new games made even now.

I love STALKER, and me 15 years ago would have had this #1 for his work, but these days, I think it's a toss-up between Andrei Rublev and Mirror.

Michael Mann is one of the absolute top for establishing a great mood/atmosphere with just the 'right' choice of music. Some favorites: Mogwai in Miami Vice (both songs) Moby's cover of New Dawn Fades in Heat. Tangerine Dream's synth ambience in Thief.

feel like I should adopt this way of speaking about games in the future to mutuals/friends because Game X meets Game Y feels almost reductive to me sometimes, but it's also a decent way to give someone an idea of a game as well. Instead, if you liked Game X and you liked Game Y, try this!

one thing the ai era makes me miss is really shitty bespoke photoshops you used to get just the lowest effort garbage imaginable made by people who have opened the program three times in their entire life, but it had some charm to it and now they just generate the same bullshit as everyone else

I think I genuinely like The Blood of Dawnwalker even more than The Witcher games. I love that it's not really beholden to established novel narratives / characters, and so far, it has more player choice/agency. This game is amazing.

It's the biggest media release in the history of this medium, so not really surprised to see blowback. It's the first GTA I won't own day-1 since I moved fully-on to PC 6 years back (I used to own consoles and PC). Look forward to playing it in 12-18 months though!

It's funny because San Andreas is heavily responsible I'd argue for the trend of AAA+ games that went and incorporated RPG elements into non-RPG games. It was sorta novel in San Andreas, but yeah ... I'm kinda fucking sick of this happening all the time now.
