The Phillies and Eagles crumbling at the same time will do a lot for Philadelphia’s sanity.

Hate it when you see what you think is a cool bird and you look it up later and it’s called like the Common Dumb Asshole. “Birders throughout history have hated its guts. It can’t even fly right.” I thought I saw an interesting guy.

We all entered the game asking how they were gonna score without Devonta and then they lost Johnson minutes before the game, then lost Barkley minutes into the game. In the rain. I’m grading on a curve this week.

The Eagles just didn’t play up to their standard today. That’s on them. They’ve gotta be accountable, to themselves and to each other you have to embrace moments like this as an opportunity to get better.

I want to be pissed at the Eagles for how this game finished, but I’m finding it hard to get too upset when they did not have their one good wide receiver, lost their top two RBs, top offensive lineman, top TE, top defensive lineman, top linebacker, and top cornerback for most of the game.

Nick Sirianni deserves credit. Eagles are undermanned but the team looked ready to play and is fighting hard.

There are a lot of true statements in this article, and I agree Dombrowski may have been hammed in this past off-season. But the decisions that hemmed them in are also his, if we're being fair about it. And he lacked the imagination to do the little things to add a bunch of 1-2 WAR players to the 40

Harper and Schwarber were 13th and 15th in OPS among 135 qualified players, so I guess offensively, that was better. The next closest Phillie in terms of OPS was Stott, who ranked 82nd out of 135 qualified players.

John Stolnis @johnstolnis.bsky.social · 22h
The other part of this problem is that the Phillies were perceived as being TOP heavy. However, the TOP wasn't that heavy at all. Harper was only worth 3.3 fWAR, Schwarber was 2.9.

The Dodgers had 18 such players, the Brewers 17. Just incredible balance throughout their rosters. Even the White Sox managed to tie for 4th in this metric!!!

Proving how much the Phillies need to balance this roster, they ranked LAST among playoff teams with total number of 1.5fWAR+ hitters AND 1.0 fWAR+ pitchers: Dodgers: 18 Brewers: 17 Yankees: 14 Rays: 13 Padres: 13 Red Sox: 13 White Sox: 13 Braves: 12 Guardians: 12 Cubs: 12 Astros: 10 Phillies: 9

The Phillies were inside the Braves' heads so badly that they burned Sale in a game they led comfortably just to own the Phillies and now are wondering whether they should start him on short rest or risk being down 0-2. You got us! Hope it was worth it!

So who says no to this trade? PHILLIES GET: C.J. Abrams NATIONALS GET: Andrew Painter & Bryan Rincon Abrams under team control for 3 more seasons, Painter for 5. Phillies are likely to move Turner to CF next year, so shortstop would be open.

As John says here, “Their team-wide Wins Above Replacement (Fangraphs) among their non-pitchers was just 12.0, 26th in MLB.” That 12 WAR is also the lowest total by #Phillies hitters since 2018. __ @thegoodphight.bsky.social

He’s just been one of the worst players in the league all season. If you’re wont to defend him with stats and compare him to players that shouldn’t even be in his tier, don’t bother. I don’t care

De La Cruz and Derek Hill are fine players to have on your team, but they probably shouldn’t BOTH be on your team. Nor should BOTH be in the starting lineup of a playoff game. NOR should Hill be batting FIFTH.

Hard to believe the Phillies picked themselves up off the mat like that. Harper’s redemption homer was sheer force of will. And Painter!!! What a beast! Incredible win.

The first two pitches Painter threw were breaking balls that missed badly. 32 of the last 35 pitches he threw were fastball/changeup. Whoever of Painter/JT/Cotham made the call to empty the clip with the changeup probably saved the season.

Andrew Painter had a 7.06 ERA on June 17. He gave up 7 runs in 2 2/3 innings at Lehigh Valley on July 10. He allowed 5 runs on 10 hits in 5 innings on September 8. Today, Painter throws three scoreless innings inthe 8th, 9th, and 10th innings in an elimination game on the road.

The Phillies have crammed every single wart into these two games. Blown save. Awful defense. Anemic offense. They’re doing it all. It’s quintessential 2026 Phillies.

The Phillies offense appears well on its way to wasting yet another legendary postseason performance by one of their starters because it appears as though they’ve never seen a split finger fastball before.

When they won playoff games, they mashed or at least scored 4 runs - average offense or better). Here are Phillies stats up to the plane to AZ and then since. Turner (in ‘23) and Harper (hasn’t fallen off as much) carried them, until they didn’t. I knew Turner was bad, but not this bad.

Phillies Game 1 heartbreaker to Braves was shocking, not surprising
Jhoan Duran’s blown save was a familiarly painful sight.

In addition to under-performance, almost every single break has gone against the Phillies in the last three years. It's really something.

John Stolnis @johnstolnis.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Part of the fear with this group of Phillies players is that they have to feel like they're snake-bitten. After getting almost all the breaks up until Game 5 of the 2022 World Series, they've gotten none. Yesterday, Harper just misses a HUGE homer off Sale. Hill just misses a game-saving catch.

The Phillies have only won 4 postseason games since then. Games 2 of the '23 NLCS and Game 2 of the '25 NLDS were blowout wins, Game 2 of the '24 NLDS was a walk-off, and Game 5 of the '23 NLCS was a 6-1 victory.

The last time the Phillies successfully converted a save opportunity in the postseason was Game 1 of the 2023 NLCS. Craig Kimbrel locked down a 5-3 victory.
