Nothing more energizing than talking to 400 freshmen who all have read your book! Been coming down to UC Santa Cruz since 2016 as Unflattening has been their common read. And yes, at the end, I did get all of them to draw for my grids & gestures activity!

A map titled "Waffle House Temporary Closures" shows the operational status of locations following Hurricane Isaias. A caption states that 5% of locations are temporarily closed. Grey dots represent open locations and orange dots represent temporarily closed locations. The map displays state outlines for the southeastern US, with grey dots widely distributed and a concentration of orange dots primarily along the Gulf Coast in states like Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama.

The GOP cut funding to the IRS because *audits work* and they fundamentally don't believe rich people should have to play by the rules.
Line chart titled "Revenue per audit," subtitled "In-person audits, 2010-2014." It plots average revenue and average cost per audit by taxpayer income percentile, poorer to richer, from the 0–5th percentile to the top 0.1%. Source: Boning et al. 2023, "A Welfare Analysis of Tax Audits Across the Income Distribution."

Across the bottom half of the income distribution, revenue and cost track closely, both around $3,000–$6,000 per audit. Above the median, revenue pulls ahead of cost: about $10,000 vs. $5,000 near the 90th percentile, and about $17,000 vs. $8,000 at the 95th–99th. At the top, revenue jumps to about $31,000 for the 99–99.9th percentile and about $90,000 for the top 0.1%.

If we could go back in time to use the national primary margin to predict the midterm House popular vote with the data available at that time, how well would it have done? Pretty well overall, with some significant misses like 2006. (Note we see no warning signs of a miss like 2006 for this year.)
Graph showing the actual House Popular vote margin compared to that predicted by the primary margin. Major trends match, and about half the time the prediction is very close.

In Mississippi and Louisiana, judges usually take three months or more to decide if someone should be released from detention. Meanwhile, in Minnesota, which experienced a surge in appeals early this year, courts often decide in less than two weeks. Full story: propub.li/4csLJaa
A cropped map showing how long habeas cases take to close, by district. Gray dots throughout represent immigration detention facilities. Regions are shaded lighter purple if they have fewer cases, or darker purple if they have more cases. An arrow points to Minnesota with this text: In Minnesota, where more than 1,500 habeas petitions have been filed since January 2025, cases have closed in a median of just 12 days. Another arrow points to Oklahoma with this text: In Oklahoma's Western District, habeas cases take a median of 63 days. An arrow points to Louisiana with the text: Over 2,600 petitions have been filed in Louisiana, which has many ICE detention centers. Cases have taken a median of 89 days to close. Finally, an arrow points to Mississippi with this text: Cases have taken a median of 92 days to close in Mississippi's Southern District, where the Adams County Correctional Center is located. Source: ProPublica analysis of court records, as of Aug. 25, and Deportation Data Project. Districts with fewer than 10 cases closed not shown. Carla

A diagram where the confidence is marked in red on an otherwise white figure

Panel 1
"Before I got a book about it."
The figure is red up to about his stomach

Panel 2
"While I was reading the book."
The figure is reading a book. He is red up to his forehead.

Panel 3
"When I had finished the book."
The red level has dropped to around his mouth

Panel 4
"One week later."
Now it is at his chest.

Panel 5
"When I try to explain it to somebody."
The level is back at stomach level.

Panel 6
"When they ask a follow-up question."
The red is so low we can barely see it.

Our new analysis found that the Supreme Court is deciding more cases through largely unsigned orders (the “shadow docket”) than through its standard procedure. Many have allowed the Trump administration to enact some of its most controversial policies. Read more: propub.li/44KNj2O
A line chart shows the number of Supreme Court decisions on the merits docket versus the shadow docket from the 2003-04 term to the 2024-25 term. The merits docket decisions trend downward over time, ending at 56 decisions, while the shadow docket decisions rise sharply in the 2018-19 term and surpass the merits docket in the last term at 63 decisions.
