This is such a weird attack from the Cons. The issue isn't that Eby is using a government service. The issue is that his government is dragging its feet on making this a universal service.

It's going to be just like the Quebec election - a winner with 28% of the vote. We gotta get rid of FPtP, man. It seems so obvious that mayoral elections should be ranked ballot.

I loved this book. It was so fun to read. I enjoyed the vivid descriptions of how these societies worked but also the explanation of how you were able together sources and analogs to get these conclusions. Truly fascinating.

This is true but also changing. I'm definitely heartened to see a generation shift where younger people are drinking less and viewing alcohol as less of a necessity to party. Which is amazing given that alcohol is more normalized and wasn't made taboo like smoking.

This is going to be harder election for the NDP than they are expecting. They really have to rely on no one being able to mobilize because what have the given their base to mobilize and get excited for? What's the four year vision that's so amazing that I'm going to go door knocking for?

Cool, another big pro-corporate, anti-worker move from our Conservative prime minister! I am becoming The Joker Source: www.ctvnews.ca/politics/art...
CTV News article text reads: The sources tell CTV News the gover ment has conveyed to them that the legislation will be aimed at introducing binding mediation before strike action is taken. Industry's message to the government was that its traditional tool to use for binding arbitration, Section 107 of the Canadian Labour Code, can only be applied too late in the labour dispute process and from its perspective, does not adequately prevent the damage caused from a work stoppage.
Several union sources CTV News spoke with are on red alert over the possibility of this legislation and contend it will strip workers of their right to strike. Unifor National President Lana Payne expressed worry on Friday in an interview on The Graham Richardson Show on HeartRadio.

There's a reason previous Liberal governments looked at privatizing airports and didn't go through with it. Private investors don't want a stake in our public assets to make them better. They’re in it to make as much money as possible for themselves - while workers and passengers pay the price.

Would it not be better to argue for fair forms of taxation that alleviate some of the underlying inequity? Increasing capital gains taxes does a similar thing but economy wide. As would raising top marginal tax rates. Neither of those options would threat the popularity of OAS.

Means testing cuts spending on programs, certainly, but it also takes more administration, creates edge cases, and can make a program less politically popular if you take people with the most money and influence out of the scheme entirely.

Someone making $100k + $9k from OAS pays $22k in taxes in BC. Maybe a bit less depending on how much is drawn from a TFSA. This hypothetical person is still a net contributor, with OAS working effectively as a tax break for being retired.

Mark Carney is often described as a “disruptor prime minister.” But for writer Linda Thornback, he’s less of a disruptor than he is a dismantler. A disruptor changes an inherited system—a dismantler removes it and leaves space for something else. ow.ly/rRv450ZOvBF

This is a $2.1B subsidy. Canada is an oil producing country and oil companies are having their best years ever with profits increasing by billions of dollars. A sensible policy is a windfall tax on oil companies and using the revenue to invest in infrastructure that makes us less dependent on oil.

So if we want to fight them, there has to be alternative ways of getting at these benefits and plans for what removing a subsidy will do throughout the economy.

Joey Broda @joeybroda.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
All this isn't too say that we shouldn't reduce subsidies. But pressures to bring prices down for consumers, build capital projects that promise jobs, get interest payments from big projects, and stabilize profit margins for pension funds are all the nice-ish reasons that these subsidies exist.

Joey Broda @joeybroda.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
Changing that credit would cause a panic among gas producers and it would cut into their profitability. Their profitability mostly benefits the super rich, but it does also have an effect on everyone's pensions which are invested in these projects and in the banks that support these projects.

Joey Broda @joeybroda.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
And some tax credits like BC's deep well credit run on inertia. The credit was initially used to encourage fracking when it was a new and expensive technology. But now everyone fracks, so the credit is effectively built into the royalty structure.

Joey Broda @joeybroda.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
there's a double win of getting jobs in a community and getting interest payments back from the company. A lot of subsidies are for investments in technology, decarbonization projects, and well clean-up. Usually these require a 60% cost commitment from a company to get a 40% subsidy.
300
Joey Broda @joeybroda.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
I think it is worthwhile to think about the political calculations of these subsidies. The biggest form of subsidy is low cost loans and tax incentives for new construction. There's an incentive for governments to invest in new infrastructure. And since they can borrow money cheaply

The best option is to weaken IP laws forced on us by NAFTA. Enact right-to-repair laws, shorten copyright, and make it legal to jailbreak tech for commercial purposes. We could make it so that Americans drive up to Canada to unlock their Teslas and iPhones.

The other obvious tool is putting on export taxes to double the pain on the USA. Aluminum, oil, potash, and electricity are all things that the US needs from us. The other obvious target is US tech, which is a major backer of Trump. Bring back the Netflix tax and ban new fed contracts with US tech.

Carney is a true neoliberal who sees all tariffs as bad. I'm worried he will buckshot tariffs, rather than see them as elements of an industrial policy. The play is to enact tariffs to build domestic industry and implement complimentary policies to support that development.
