This is your occasional reminder that generative "AI" in particular could have been developed on public domain materials and/or licensed and compensated works but the major players intentionally, methodically and systemically chose to steal labor from working creative folks instead

Psychomancy – Self-Publishing and Me
So, every so often a reader will email me or contact me on social media or what not, and ask why I did something or didn't do another thing, or just ask me to go into more detail about a piece of work or an off-hand remark I made in an interview. While I normally answer those in the medium the question arrived in, there are always a few that I feel need a bit more breathing room - or get asked so often that I feel the need to write something I can just link to.

[A parody of MR ROGERS’ NEIGHBOURHOOD, in which the kindly Mr Rogers takes us to see local things in his town.]

1
[title]
MR ROGERS’ NEIGHBOURHOOD

MR ROGERS:

Hi there

2
Today, I’d like to take you to visit some of my neighbours…

[He puts his coat on to leave his house]

3
At a wonderful local event,

[We see the cute toy-town diorama of his village famous from the TV show. The camera pulls out…]

4
The Data Center protest.

[The camera has pulled out further and now we see a huge DATA CENTER at the edge of town].

5
MR ROGERS [joining a crowd protesting outside the Data Center]:

The Data Center is an enormous, windowless, endlessly humming building outside of our town

6
…Which has tripled energy prices, drank all the water, and created four jobs.

7
[to camera, as if kindly explaining to the viewing children]:

Four jobs! Golly!

8
LADY PROTESTOR [probably NAOMI KLEIN, holding a sign]:

In a way, the Data Center is kind of a vivid metaphor for a future we feel locked out of!

9
MR ROGERS [to camera again]:

A metaphor.

10
That’s something that lets us clarify our feelings about something else.

11
LADY PROTESTOR:
How do you feel, Mr Rogers?

MR ROGERS:
I feel like bringing down the government!

12
MR ROGERS [now holding a sign and protesting]:

It’s good to have neighbors.

[ends]

Today's review is the 2007 zombies-on-a-plane film, Flight of the Living Dead. It's full of character actors! They all die.
joshuamreynolds.co.uk
Flight of the Living Dead (2007)
I had completely forgotten that I'd seen this one a few years ago, during my 'writing a Zombicide novel' zombie movie marathon (the results of which you can read, if you're of a mind - check out Aconyte Books, and Zombicide: Last Resort). This isn't to say that it's a bad film, just that it's an easily forgettable one. It's also a direct-to-video zombie film, of which there are loads - many of which are equal parts awful and boring. FotLD is neither of those things. It's not particularly good, mind; but it's not bad.

I'm going to write some stuff about vampires, because why not, right?
joshuamreynolds.co.uk
Bury My Heart at the Crossroads
Vampires. I've had them on the brain, lately. Some of it is down to listening to the new (ish) Mikal KHill EP, The Clock is Ticking. The first track, "The Riot", has a line in the hook: 'An empire of vampires and grifters' which sticks with me even now. I want to steal it for something - a line of dialogue, an inner monologue, something - but I'm trying to refrain from that sort of magpie-ism. Nonetheless, it's a great EP, check it out. Anyway, vampires. My first real experience with vampire fiction was the 1987 anthology, …

I talk a bit about another favourite series of mine - Tim Dorsey's Serge Storms novels...
joshuamreynolds.co.uk
Down and Out in Florida
I finally managed to read Tim Dorsey's latest - and last - Serge Storms novel, The Maltese Iguana last month, and it was a bittersweet experience. Dorsey died recently, and that means no more adventures of the loveable Florida-phile (and occasional serial killer) Serge, and his perennial wingman, Coleman. At the end of the book, Serge and Coleman ride off into the Miami sunset, on the hunt for new adventure - ones that we'll never get to see. I've been reading Dorsey's books for damn near twenty years now, and I've been rereading them just as long.

joshuamreynolds.co.uk
The Thing from Another World (1951)
While I'm a huge fan of John Carpenter's 1982 remake (re-envisioning?), the original 1951 RKO classic remains one of my favourite films from the era of space invaders and atomic monsters. There's just something about the way James Arness looms, I guess. Being 6'7 helped some with that, I suppose. At any rate, it's a film I've watched many times - and will, no doubt, watch many more - because for all the jokes about space carrots, it's an extremely well-done film. For all that it lacks the paranoia of the source material (John W.

The Great Library of Mortlake Sinister Tomes of the Royal Occultist Mythos. 5. Testimony of a Mudlark Testimony of a Mudlark or What the Mudlark Saw on An October Morning to give it it's full title, is a curious work, published in 1856 or thereabouts by a now-defunct printer, in a limited run of a few dozen copies. A Year of Mystery Kickstarter
Another week, another Kickstarter. This time around, its Belanger Books' campaign to fund Sherlock Holmes: A Year of Mystery 1891 and 1892. I happen to have stories in both volumes - "Serpents Tooth" in 1891 and "The Lord of the Sheepfolds" in 1892. Both stories feature not Holmes and Watson, but gossipmonger Langdale Pike and his bodyguard, Harrison Stickle. Pike is one of the innumerable side characters who appear offscreen in the Holmes canon. In Pike's case, he was mentioned only once, in "The Adventure of the Three Gables", and was masterfully played by Peter Wyngarde in the Granada Television adaption of the story.

Screenshot of the homepage of our village website. The text reads;
Willerby lies in a web of ancient Mercian roads close to the cross of old Watling Street and the Fosse.

We're small, quiet and unremarkable most of the time. There's a pub on the green by the river, a church built on the site of an older temple and a motte and bailey castle on top of the hill where the Roman watch tower used to be.

We bicker and squabble - about dog mess and rights of way and the bins - but we get on well enough most of the time.

But strange things happen here too.

We have more than the usual number of ghosts, aren't firmly tethered in time and are often visited by people from very far away.

We have many stories and you can find them all here, to read or to listen to.

Thank you for visiting us.

Woof. Today's review was a bad one. 1996's Grim is a film I should have loved - but definitely did not.
joshuamreynolds.co.uk
Grim (1996)
This one is going to be brief, because frankly, there's not much to say about Grim (1996) , other than it's bad. And not in a 'so bad it's good' sort of way, but just in a 'it's tedious' sort of way. Boring. It's boring. The characters are boring, the narrative is boring and the eponymous Temu Rawhead Rex that everything revolves around is also boring - which is probably the most damning thing about the film. If the monster is boring, what are you even doing? The annoying thing is there's a lot of potential here: a distinctly European-style ogre imprisoned in a West Virginia mine is a wild concept.
