Graphic of six book covers: Devilry in Godling Wood by Coy Hall showing a mounted figure with 3 faces and dagger on a strange horse pig hybrid rearing over a dragon like figure with long tail; The Stars Will Be Our Ocean by Lizzie Blackwood showing a humanoid figure and alien with shark like features floating or dancing in space; Unsaved by Pemry Janes showing a robot wearing a cowboy hat and long duster holding a gun and sitting on a fallen mech head in front of a red sky and white sun or moon. Kayak by Kristal Stittle showing a view from above of an orange kayak and paddler moving through blue water between green islands. Come Away Again by Mere Rain showing a person standing with back to viewer in a misty forest, surrounded by glittering lights. Wereconifer by Polenth Blake showing a hand-drawn pine tree with round colored lights.

Oh, hey. I was thrilled to write an introduction to two novels by one of my all-time favorite writers, especially as THE VENGEFUL VIRGIN was the first Brewer I ever read. Coming November 3rd from Stark House. a.co/d/03IdH7qD

31 Days of Halloween: Perversion Story (1969). Fulci’s first foray into giallo territory is a thriller in a Hitchcockian vein, set in San Francisco, about a doctor whose wife dies, then he finds a hooker who looks like her, & it all might be a plot directed at the doc himself.

Back in the day, this was my first exposure to many great authors of horror fiction: Campbell, Bloch, Leiber, Wagner, Blackwood, Barker, on & on. Even to my hero MR James. Definitely a book that shaped me, opening up an entire world.

Today’s story: In the Pines (1973) by Karl Edward Wagner. A good old-fashioned ghost tale set in the mountains of Tennessee. A couple torn by tragedy rents a cabin, the husband finds a mysterious portrait, & the subject of said portrait finds him.

Today’s story: The Vanishing American (1955) by Charles Beaumont. Goddamn this one hits hard. Making yourself invisible through a life of wasted drudgery. Does what speculative fiction does best: deliver ecstatic truth through a tale of the fantastic. Greatness.

The Psycho Legacy (2010). Capped off my rewatch of the Psycho films with this documentary. It’s wonderful, mixing in archival behind the scenes footage & interviews with new interviews. Psycho 2 & 3 cast & crew interviews are the best. With 1, nobody is alive. With 4, who cares.

Today’s story: Sorry, Right Number (1953) by Richard Matheson. Aka Long Distance Call. Plays with the legend of phantom phone calls. Following a storm, an invalid receives strange calls that go from silence to a single hello to creepier messages. Later an episode of The Twilight Zone.

Today’s story: The Collector Comes After Payday (1953) by Fletcher Flora. A crime tale of comeuppance, where a beaten down man murders his dad, finds himself suddenly lucky, & undoes it all, with, we assume, his old man’s spirit having the last laugh. More 30s than 50s in tone.

Have a good idea for my next book. I’ve been wanting to write a crime novel set in 70s Italy, & I came up with a title & plot. I can tie it into a short story I already have. My idea is to create a potential series subtitled Napoli ’79.

Read an excellent story by Shirley Jackson: ‘A Visit’ (1950). Gothic, strange, and ambiguous enough to leave you wondering about the ghostly possibilities. And what awaits Margaret, the visitor, now freshly sewn into another tapestry in this forever house. Quiet and weird.

Great episode of CBS Radio Mystery Theater: The Magus (1977). Fred Gwynne is Adrian Storm, a rich guy with a cat named Mephisto. He obsesses over making his reflection disappear from a mirror with his occult power of will, staying in a bedroom before the glass all his days.

Devilry in Godling Wood, fashioned as a medieval fable, is one of @coyhall.bsky.social's best works to date. The language is lush, painting the hamlet, castle, and surrounding woods in thin, serpent-skin shadow. If you love folk and medieval horror, don't sleep on this.
