August 6, 2026 the Orioles manager at the time had a different take for Holliday.
waoco.
If he'd have played it safer, Beavers would have scored after Alonso and Gunnar Henderson walked and Christian Encarnacion-Strand was hit by a pitch. Still, a prime opportunity remained with the bases loaded for Holliday. But after watching the three batters in front of him reach because Angels right-hander Ryan Johnson couldn't find the strike zone, Holliday swung at the first pitch he saw and grounded out to second.
"If he feels like it's a good pitch to hit, you've got to go," Albernaz said.
"You've got to take your shot. You can't be passive up there. If it's a good pitch to hit like that, let it rip."

The tell that the entire Kaepernick discourse was culture war bullshit is that Jackie Robinson, a Republican veteran, wrote in his memoir that he never stood for or sang the anthem, or saluted the flag, because he was "a Black man in a white world." And everybody was like, "Yeah, ok. Fair enough."

What's cool about books is that even after World Cups are over, you can still read them to make sense of what you just saw. You can pick up a copy of mine, THE LONG GAME, at, say, @bookculture.com in Long Island City. Where you'll find it on, oh, you know, the non-fiction BEST-SELLERS TABLE.

Reading a book about Earl Weaver, and my eyebrows shot up at these descriptions of batter-to-batter betting in the middle of the 20th century.
Photo of text from an e-reader. Excerpt from "The Last Manager" by John W. Miller.

Text says:

...predictive algorithms as teams.

In the 1940s, bars, saloons, clubs, and hotels carried Western Union tickers that spit out scores. Newspapers printed odds and quoted bookmakers on big games. "You will see them everywhere if you know where to look 'finger' bettors, they are sometimes called in the trade," reported John Lardner in Newsweek in 1944. "The gentlemen occupy the same seats daily, and offer odds and take bets by hand signals on balls, strikes, hits, whether there will be a score that inning, etc. That payoff is outside the ballpark after the game." In 1949, casinos in Los Angeles offered "television baseball gambling." Croupiers stood in front of a televised ballgame singing out odds. "Will the batter fly out, strike out, single, knock the ball out of the park? Will the runner on second go on the next pitch? What will the next pitch be, ball or strike?"

St. Louis was a hotbed. Bookies in town handled $1.5 million a week in wagers on baseball. Uncle Bud and his associates at Sportsman's Park offered prop bets on pitch counts, runs, hits, and a dozen other categories. The Cardinals sometimes cracked down, under pressure from Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis, the baseball...
