as a proud western pennsylvanian who has had many many conversations with former steelworkers I cannot stress enough how much these people feared and resented the mill. It was dangerous, grueling, and dehumanizing. Their 'good life' came from the security, dignity, and protection won by their union.

Every college in this country decided that expelling and/or sending the police to beat the shit out of their own students for the crime of being opposed to genocide was their top priority. That and giving Trump complete control of what they teach. Contrast that with how they treat rapists.

I think it’s fair to say that the student journalists at Cornell are braver than the news networks who just gave up on their WH pool ban even though CNN is still being denied access. www.cornellsun.com/article/2026...

The problem with education is that it's a solved problem. Students need small classes, individual attention, lots of writing, lots of feedback, access to a well-stocked library, time to think, and time to talk with their peers. We just don't like the answer, so we keep trying to do other stuff.

Threw some Baudrillard at the kids yesterday and they ate it up. One reason I teach theory is that I’ve seen how it can grant students the permission and vocabulary to be smart, and to view their own lives as objects worthy of smart analysis, in ways way pure “skills”-based education cannot.

Everyone should read this and then read the 24 consecutive hour timeline meltdowns Stancil, ironic John Brown centrist account and other libs are having about the Talarico interview. Which argument actually motivates you? Which one is going to resonate with regular people? I think it’s pretty clear!
We cannot be the ones to preemptively and
"pragmatically" kick our more vulnerable allies off of the plane. The end result will be having to face the fascists later on anyway but with a significantly diminished coalition. Better to turn around right now to face them with our full complement of fighters.
You say "I am for the dignity and safety and equal rights of trans people everywhere.
Fuck you. The end."
And if they keep with the questions about children's sports the answer is "Who gives a shit?"
"I do not believe you care about this issue.
You are lying. In fact you're a straight up weirdo for fixating on kids' genitals so much. That is odd behavior. Let kids run around with their friends."

anyway, the American id understander himself, Hunter S. Thompson, the next week for goddamn ESPN of all places. the party's over, folks.
We are At War now, according to President Bush, and I take him at his word. He also says this War might last for "a very long time."

Generals and military scholars will tell you that eight or 10 years is actually not such a long time in the span of human history -- which is no doubt true -- but history also tells us that 10 years of martial law and a war-time economy are going to feel like a Lifetime to people who are in their twenties today. The poor bastards of what will forever be known as Generation Z are doomed to be the first generation of Americans who will grow up with a lower standard of living than their parents enjoyed.

That is extremely heavy news, and it will take a while for it to sink in. The 22 babies born in New York City while the World Trade Center burned will never know what they missed. The last half of the 20th century will seem like a wild party for rich kids, compared to what's coming now. The party's over, folks. The time has come for loyal Americans to Sacrifice. ... Sacrifice. ... Sacrifice. That is the new buzz-word in Washington. But what it means is not entirely clear.

teaching sontag in visual cultures today. she was right then and is even more so now
excerpt from Susan Sontag's reflection in The New Yorker on 9/16/2001: "Those in public office have let us know that they consider their task to be a manipulative one: confidence-building and grief management. Politics, the politics of a democracy—which entails disagreement, which promotes candor—has been replaced by psychotherapy. Let’s by all means grieve together. But let’s not be stupid together. A few shreds of historical awareness might help us understand what has just happened, and what may continue to happen. “Our country is strong,” we are told again and again. I for one don’t find this entirely consoling. Who doubts that America is strong? But that’s not all America has to be."

I am really sad to hear that Gaylyn Studlar died today. A towering figure in feminist film history, her work on gender, stardom & fan culture had an immeasurable impact on my own thinking. Way ahead of her time on masculinity and masochism. Also a kind & generous human, all too rare in this biz.
