Hegseth is a great example of a common type of officer who's ended up in charge of something, doesn't have a clue how to do the job, and just falls back on PT, grooming, slogans, and searching for scapegoats. If you put him in charge of a Cinnabon he would do the exact same things.

This would be the equivalent of sports coverage devoting itself to reporting on gambling markets instead of the game. Because real reporting on real stories is hard.

Another thing about fraternities is that the hazing rituals where slightly older young men would physically, mentally emotionally and sometimes even sexually abuse slightly younger young men have always disturbed and upset me greatly. And it’s really telling that I’ve seen men defend those too

I never understood the point of harming emotionally or very often physically(that's what hazing is) people that were going to be my "brothers" for the next several years. Real psyop from the get go. And the people who enjoy it are the people I'd never trust in my life with anything. Sadists.

Sigh. This is assuming that the action is shaping the language. The language is shaping the action. It cannot do a good job at doing what private dialects are actually doing — building social cohesion, communicating power relations, connecting events often in non-linear and hard to categorize ways.

Our president built his own social media platform that he uses to decree executive orders, threaten enemies and allies, manipulate the stock market and oil futures, and post weird ai memes. That's not normal, and we still shouldn't pretend it is.

The amount of Amazon workers relying on SNAP and Medicaid has nearly tripled since 2020 — while Amazon’s annual profits soared by over 550%. It’s the same story everywhere: corporate profits are at record highs, while workers’ share of the economy is at a record low. We must unrig the system.

ICE cannot do what it’s doing without local law enforcement. They need their manpower and infrastructure. That means if you want to stop ICE you are going to have to confront police collaboration and police power. I’m sorry but progressive hopes of avoiding this conflict are a recipe for failure.

By moving to the “center,” Democrats have failed to fight the forces that led us to Donald Trump: widening inequality, economic insecurity, and the unchecked political power of corporations and the rich. Political centrism is nonsense. There is no middle ground between democracy and oligarchy.

They don't call Mina the GOAT for nothing
Mina Kimes in WIRED on why Bluesky is great and Twitter sucks shit:

"Favorite social network: Bluesky
I post everywhere to try and get my work out there and get it seen and read. But I would say the one that I use the most is Bluesky. While it has its flaws, there's definitely the occasional sports ball person in my mentions. I’ve found the interactions on there are the most like interactions I have with people in the real world, which is a rarity on the social internet these days.

Least favorite social network: Twitter
Everyone says Twitter, right? Which is a bummer because it used to be really fun and essential for news. When breaking news was happening, it was a place you'd go to get on-the-ground impressions. You could meet friends, you could find new writers and comedians, and all of that feels lost just because Elon completely killed the vibe. And I say that because obviously he's done things far more serious in terms of poisoning the discourse, and the place is a cesspool for racism and misogyny and misinformation, but it's also just, like, a terrible fucking hang. Everyone either seems miserable or is determined to make other people miserable.

Sometimes I think about the amount of shared trauma we have experienced, and I wonder what collective healing would look like. And maybe that's being hopeful, and also maybe we try to be mindful enough to do a little healing every day when we can. And be kind to each other. We got to have us!
