Yeah, I make muffins from scratch with oat flour and whole oats for lower carbs and higher fiber, which is incidentally gluten-free, but not deliberately (and still not good for a lot of celiacs because everything is complicated), but I've learned to avoid commercially produced GF baked goods.

Like, gluten is a protein! That's the good part! (Presuming we're only talking blood sugar regulation without additional gluten-related issues.) I have come up with some delightful diabetic-friendly muffins that are accidentally gluten-free, but that's incidental to the lower carb count.

Same. I'm genuinely stunned by the number of people who have responded to the news that I'm diabetic with, "Don't worry, we'll get you something gluten-free."

If being medically forced to limit and carefully monitor my carbohydrate intake has taught me anything, it's that most people have no idea what the fuck a carbohydrate is or what it does.

Ate a second bowl for lunch today, and this is one of my favorite new things I've made recently. I'm going to be making it again for sure.

Gave a shot at making curry ramen today, pretty pleased with how it came out.
A bowl of bright yellow broth filled with noodles with toppings. Toppings clockwise from top: chicken meatballs, pickled red onions and carrots, sauteed bok choy, and a medium boiled egg.

back in the pre-marriage equality era I once heard a close friend from church earnestly say to someone “I just can’t understand why gay people want to DESTROY my marriage by redefining the meaning of it” I’ll remember the way she said the word “destroy” until the day I die, because she meant it

In school, I was taught the Tragedy of the Commons as settled economic truth. I had to unlearn it on my own. When more kids are taught Ostrom than Hardin—or at least Hardin is never taught without Ostrom as a response—we'll be in a lot better shape as a society. Happy birthday.

Had a very frustrating time where I decided to start practicing my instruments again, but couldn't find my music stand anywhere... And like. My house isn't the cleanest, but it's more or less orderly and there are limited places for things to hide and where on earth did I put that stupid thing.

Anyway, I'm looking at hand towel holders because I've been using a nail and a binder clip for years, and this is yet another small thing that will make me very happy that I can do for around $20.

It turned out a replacement for a broken doorknob (interior door) was around $5, and again took minutes to install.

For example: I hated the paper towel holder that was here when I moved in. It took me about 15 years to realize that I hated it was a good enough reason to replace it. One I like quite a lot was less than $10 and installed in literally minutes.

There are things around my house that need fixing that will require hundreds or thousands of dollars to fix. Things I have to live with while I struggle to save. But sometimes I forget there are things that I can fix with $20 or less. And yeah, I'm not quite in 'casually drop $20' territory, but...

At the point where I've made not one, but two recipes I don't like, but groceries are expensive and I don't want to waste anything, but I'm also having a hard time choking them down. My impulse is to try to "fix" them, but I'm worried I'll just end up with 3x the volume of food that I don't like.

If I had the money, I would have so many instruments. I'd probably never be good at playing hammered dulcimer, hurdy gurdy, tagelharpa, lyre, great harp, piano, hand pan, or clarinet. But it would be cool to theoretically have the possibility.

money can't buy happiness means rich people can't bribe reality to make them inwardly contented with their own personal demons they fashioned while stepping on the throats of others, not that people shouldn't need basic living necessities in a modern fucking society like shelter food and medicine

After having green hair for well more than a decade, I can confidently say the two best things about it are that it scares away people I don't want to talk to anyway and signals to people I'm happy to help that I'm a safe person. Win-win.
