If you provide less support to Ukraine, you have less leverage over Ukraine. Donald Trump fundamentally doesn't understand this, which is why he keeps reducing support and then he's surprised when Kyiv does whatever Kyiv wants to do

Europe needs a Plan B. It may not be the best plan, certainly not as good as the pre-2025 US security guarantee. But we can't just sit and hope that this or a future US administration won't pull the plug on us at the critical moment.

As we move into the final phase of Trump's second administration, his ability to enact any meaningful long-term change will be increasingly restricted. But he can still destroy a lot, both domestically and internationally. He will become even more prone to lashing out as his power ebbs away.

It has been a horrible night for Kyiv, with ballistic missile attacks throughout the night. Again, Russia struck energy facilities, on top of killing & injuring civilians. According to the Ukrainian authorities, there was no intelligence sharing by "partners" (=the US). The threat persists.

There are divergent realities running in parallel when it comes to transatlantic security: good engagement w US military & even some civilian policymakers, but very visible degeneration & dysfunction at the top. I guess the bet is to style it out for the next 2 years (again).

The drone threat is arguably even more concerning for smaller militaries, which rely on lower numbers of increasingly high-end fighters. These aircraft are often concentrated at a few bases, at least in peactime.

Drone-enabled counterforce strikes against strategic bombers is now something that US, Russia, China have to take seriously. Bombers are vulnerable, esp without hard shelters, and their relatively limited numbers mean that a successful strike against even one base can have a big impact.

Badenoch claims 'we haven't called it Iron Dome' - despite Tories using phrase in their press release

Q: You say your Iron Dome will protect the whole of the UK, and bases abroad. But Sir Richard Barrons, the former general, has said that a proper air defence like this would cost up to £100bn.

Badenoch says Barrons is referring to an Israel-style Iron Dome.

She says she is referring to something different. She says the UK should be able to defend itself from, for example, someone on a boat firing a drone at the system.

Q: But it is nothing like Israel’s Iron Dome. It is a gimmick, isn’t it?

Badenoch replied:

It’s not going to be exactly like the Irone Dome. We haven’t called it an Iron Dome.

I don't think it's fully automatic eithet, but several of the Russian sources quoted in the Times piece refer to "automation/ic" element, so there is some reason to consider that aspect. Of course, the more automated the Russians make it sound the scarier it appears.

I guess how problematic one thinks Perimeter is depends on the level of automaticity built into the system. That seems to be left (deliberately?) ambiguous.
