thinking about this again and smiling

“james hennessy: it's sad reading like 14th century Christian theologians who spent an inordinate amount of time writing "OK there are exactly 3,892 demons and these are their names and these are their powers"... man, you would have loved Dragonball Z

There have been two occasions in my career where I had to go to war with teammates against mistaken understandings of probability. In both cases, it was because people expected large numbers of d6s to occasionally result in maximum damage. But the curves for 3d6 and 15d6 (e.g.) look like this:

Two curves showing the distribution of results across 3d6 and 15d6. At the extreme ends of the first, 3 and 18 are both 0.46% likely. On the second curve, the extremes are 15 and 90 damage, but the probability drops below 0.00% below 29 and above 76.

I have read the full quote but the headline makes it sound like he's going "You think kids are stupid as shit? I don't even know where I /live/." And then you see the full quote and it turns out, yeah, that's basically what he's saying.

In retrospect, Obsidian getting Pentiment out there into the world before Microsoft exploded really feels like they pulled off the weirdest heist in gaming history.

I truly hope Bungie can turn things around - the new direction for Marathon sounds quietly exciting, Destiny deserves to be playable in its entirety - but it's impossible to think of a clearer example of the ways in which livelihoods in this industry are controlled by people who are Not Smart

With the new starcraft trailer, suits that just open up i feel goes against the original claustrophobic elements of the terran suit, the first SC2 trailer showcasing the entire assembly of getting put into a mobile prison is just cinema.

Eye popping. Court just unsealed Summary Judgment motions in New York Times v OpenAI / Microsoft. Easy to see why the AI companies had so many redactions (pink). Their own people wrote the lede for NYT, the "largest theft of labor in human history"... "more and more substitutive..." /1
