New blog post from me that is a bit of a doozy. It takes an evolutionary biology look at Recursive Self Improvement. In the spirit of a blog post, its got toy models, a coda with something I'd totally missed before writing it, etc... joebakcoleman.com/blog/2026-10...

Actually a subtle nuance to this that makes it a lot worse. Pretty much anyone in management necessarily views AI as something that can blur the boundaries between roles so those closest to programmers (QA) get tasked with writing automated tests in bulk for every single bug.

The massive chunk being syphoned off to private schools is one of the main things the kids are protesting about. There's no way the fucking BBC correspondent doesn't know that, but it doesn't get mentioned here.

It's presumably half arsed attempt to deal with the already falling rates of building, the government just has no other suggestion than boost developer profits with public money.

The sad answer to this is that a lot of people in power are very comfortable with harm. They do not care at all about csam or racist abuse or disinformation. And they are obsessed with likes, follower count and having their ego boosted by panels and talks. That’s all it is. Cruelty is the point

Isn't it 'cos they needed to use up the whole 6 seconds, so intentional safety but using up all the clock so there wasn't another play for them to score? If they'd just done it simply there would've been another play for the other team anyway?

I think people should just stop accepting any old data announced in a poll by a student housing company looking for free press. In fact I think we should just ignore polls all round www.hackedoff.org/blog-posts/h...

But it hugely impacts Andy Burnham, so of course it's purely about his ego, so it has to be fixed immediately.

Seeing the BBC tech “journalists” like Tidy and Kleinman breathlessly report AI doomerism as truth, is sad. Not just because they have the resources to report more accurately, but because they choose instead to listen to their Twitter mates who know nothing.

When the UK stopped requiring it be in gallons almost all the petrol stations moved over very quickly, long before the requirement for it to be litres. But the change wasn't at the same time as a roll over of digits.

Hooter is just nose, so the bowler (Razullah in his first match) tried to get it to bounce high up towards the nose of the batsman (Brook) but because he was ready for it he hoicked (a hard but inelegant cross bat shot) to the boundary bouncing once.

I like that after having to resign for being not quite sane enough to be president following such antics, he was then elected a senator - political jobs must have levels of sanity I never quite realised.

No, no, you're so special but just this slightest, tiniest bit wrong, that the infinite supernatural will come along and fix that because you're such a special little boy. Even though you're basically perfect any way. Maybe you just didn't know your employees kid had ricketts?

Yes, but they're weirdly all doing the exact same policies in the exact same smarmy and incompetent way, so you still need to worry a bit. I'm sure this was just him being personally useless and not understanding what he was actually saying vs what he thought he was saying though.

In the UK the police wouldn't accept $30 equivalent, they're not interested in trivial lost property - I think most would give it to the store though. Mainly 'cos the only people carrying cash are those most in need if they lose it so there is a chance it would be recovered by them asking.

Obviously it makes sense that they won't be able to deliver that many houses. It does not make sense that they ministers keep talking as if they are, it's deeply dishonest and misleading. 1980 is not the "post war period". Endless dishonesty by ministers pretending they're delivering is bad.

If you're an organisation where the public has access to, and you're not banning these, I can only assume you are pro-pervert, and those are the customers you want.

I think they're life rafts, but I think they're the sort of life rafts that inflate on contact with the water so just unused ones which inflated when it sank and they came in contact with sea.

41 years ago, Monty Brewster made a lot of money investing in an iceberg business delivering icebergs to the Sahara, suggesting that it's not "sufficiently advanced for commercial use" is crazy and shows they haven't even watched that high profile documentary!

If I wanted to protect the most prestigious and highly paid jobs for the social groups who usually hold them I'd probably design an education system that discouraged poorer children from studying the entry qualifications for these jobs as early as possible..

The rule is normally expressed as "lower case with an initial cap for acronyms where you would normally pronounce the set of letters as a word" And British English also has a huge preference for saying anything as a word rather than spelling out letters that probably ends up as most of them.

Maybe they think the tax rises will be based on the housing wealth the pensioners built due to the artificially low tax rates when these pensioners were earning and inflating house values.

No, not really, the hand of god is significant in England football history of course, but that was still mostly Maradona in terms of rivalry I'd say, so if he was playing maybe. It's not Germany, and otherwise any other team that you're likely to meet in the semis is going to be similar "rivalry".

I don't think independence would work, there's no history of indigenous government, perhaps get the experienced leaders of the McDonald and Heard islands to help administer as they have quite a lot of ties with the locals and did well with the Trump tarriffs.

It was a hot day, he was worried about his big photoshoot with the top photographer didn't want sweat stains on nice dress shirt - the jacket would've overshadowed the nice young pump sales guy, so he took it off whilst the photographer was checking the lighting etc. Hilarious mix-up on photo desk.

It's a very uninteresting story if all it is is that the survey participants interpreted the question differently, it's not a story at all other than a linguistics one. It's only a story that gets published to push the bigoted pensioner readership. Responsible journalism would avoid this misinfo.

Jim Ley @jibberjim.bsky.social · 11/07/2026
It would probably have been a responsible idea to investigate that before publishing it as boomer bait in your newspaper then.

Jim Ley @jibberjim.bsky.social · 11/07/2026
Especially when it could easily be a linguistics question and just a change in the interpretation of the meaning of words as the language changes over generations, but the biases always show in the interpreter.

It's happened in England in soccer, 2004 the now MK Dons moved from Wimbledon to Milton Keynes. It was pretty controversial though, and the replacement Wimbledon team is now in the same league.

But that "cooling" just moves heat into the house, which for some of the year is a positive, it's also - because the ambient temperature is low and because the load on the computer is much less, the cooling requirements are easily met by passive cooling, or at most a fan.
000
Jim Ley @jibberjim.bsky.social · 03/07/2026
Cooling is not relevant in the domestic environment for most of the world for most of the year - we don't run air conditioning in most of the world for all but a tiny part of the year, and for the winter months, the heat is a positive.
100
Jim Ley @jibberjim.bsky.social · 03/07/2026
Surely they use the same watts per token for the actual compute - however there's no cost of data transmission, and no energy requirement to cool the device for most of the year in most of the world. Efficiency of use of the hardware yes, but I don't see this as "FAR"

Is the oddity not that people are taking it seriously as a policy proposal to achieve anything, rather than thinking of it as pure media theatre designed to appeal to "anti-judge" racists?

It's actually a sop to the pub industry, getting the "kids" off their phones early enough that they can be down the pub drinking.
