Oh my fucking god. My aunt's due to be discharged from the rehab ward on Friday so mum was planning to go down and stay a few days. But at 9pm she got a call from the rehab ward to inform her that "her relative" has covid and has been rushed to the A&E dept at another hospital.

I have written to @bphillipsonmp.bsky.social to ask some important questions relating to her appearance and comments on The Daily T's Sunday Showdown, where she stated she was "a woman, defined by my biology", and that a women’s refuge should be for those of us who are “biologically women"

"... When asked whether you would have allowed a trans woman fleeing domestic abuse into the women’s refuge you once managed, you answered: “No.”

You said that alternative provision could be made, and that a women’s refuge should be for those of us who are “biologically women”.

That deserves considerably more scrutiny than another political soundbite.

You have chosen to justify your position by appealing to biology, so I would like you to explain what you mean by that claim in biological terms, rather than simply referring back to the law, the Supreme Court or the EHRC.

What, biologically, is a woman?

The scientific picture is considerably more complicated than the neat binary your statement suggests. Sex-related biology involves multiple characteristics, including chromosomes, gonads, reproductive anatomy, hormones and secondary sex characteristics. These characteristics do not always align in the stereotypical way, which is why medicine recognises differences of sex development. Contemporary scientific literature describes sex-related biology as involving multiple interacting characteristics rather than one single biological test that can infallibly sort every human being into one of two boxes.

You already know this. Biologists, doctors and other experts sent you an open letter specifically explaining these issues. They warned that reducing human sex biology to an immutable binary is an oversimplification and that policy built upon that oversimplification can cause real harm.

That does not mean biological sex is meaningless. It obviously is not. Female and male reproductive biology are real and medically important. But acknowledging that doesn't require pretending every human body is a perfectly standard biological specimen.

So let us get away from slogans.

You say that you are a woman “defined by my biology”. You say that I am not.

What, precisely, is the biological distinction you are making?"

"...And how would you establish it?

Would you take my blood? Sequence my chromosomes? Examine my gonads? Inspect my anatomy? Measure my hormones? Demand medical records?

Because the moment “biologically a woman” has to become a real-world test rather than a political phrase, the simplicity disappears.

And nowhere is that more obvious than in the refuge you once managed.

Imagine a woman arriving at the door after fleeing an abusive partner. She is terrified. She has no passport, no birth certificate and no medical records. She may have left everything behind to get herself and her children somewhere safe.

You have said the refuge should be for women who are “biologically women”.

So how does the refuge establish that?

Does she need to prove her chromosomes before being allowed through the door? Does somebody examine her body? Does she have to produce evidence of her reproductive anatomy? Or does a member of staff simply look at her and decide whether she appears sufficiently female?

Because the last option is not biology.

It is gender policing.

And then comes the question you cannot escape: how would you identify a trans woman without simply assuming that she is trans?

You cannot see somebody's chromosomes. You cannot see their gonads. You cannot see their hormone levels. You cannot see their developmental history.

If your answer is appearance, you have created a system in which women can be challenged because they are too masculine, too tall, too muscular, too deep-voiced, too gender-nonconforming or do not conform to somebody else's idea of what a woman is supposed to look like.

That is not a minor administrative problem. It is the policing of women's bodies, dressed up as biological certainty.

And feminism should recognise that for what it is...."

So I am asking you, as Minister for Women and Equalities, to answer some very straightforward questions.

What biological characteristics make you a woman and make me not one?

How would you establish that distinction in practice?

How does your definition account for women with differences of sex development?

What happens to women whose chromosomes do not fit the stereotypical XX model?

What happens to women who cannot produce eggs, who have no ovaries, who have undergone hysterectomy or who have otherwise experienced changes to their reproductive anatomy?

And most importantly:

How does a frightened woman fleeing domestic abuse prove that she is “biologically a woman” without being subjected to exactly the kind of bodily scrutiny and gender policing that feminists have spent generations challenging?

If your answer is that she does not have to prove it, then why should a trans woman?

If your answer is documentation, what happens to the woman who has none?

If your answer is appearance, whose idea of female appearance are you using?

And if there is no practical biological test, then perhaps “biology” is not quite the straightforward answer you have presented it as.

Women fleeing violence need refuge workers asking whether they are safe, not whether they can pass an ideological biology exam....."

"...You have chosen to draw a line between yourself and me by saying that you are a woman defined by biology and that women like me are not. I am therefore asking you to explain where that line actually is.

Not in a court judgment.

Not in an EHRC document.

Not in a political slogan.

In biology.

Because if you cannot define the biological test, and cannot explain how it could be applied fairly to women standing at the door of a refuge, then “biologically a woman” is not the clear, objective safeguard you claim it is.

It is simply a phrase being used to decide which women are allowed through the door.

And when the woman on the other side of that door is fleeing an abuser, that is not an abstract debate.

That is somebody's life.

Early on in Blue Prince you find a few notes dotted about explaining the basics of the game, and one of them says you might want to grab some paper to keep track of things. And I started doing that but I kept wanting to make everything super neat and organised and it was actually slowing me down.

So my aunt is on a rehab ward which is great, but covid and other respiratory viruses are spiking on the ward which is really not good. In addition to the obvious risk to my aunt, it means most of her close family and friends can't visit due to being chronically ill or carers to other family.

Some people think GPS loss is just an annoyance for aircraft. Air traffic controller safety reports offer a different perspective. "Someone will get hurt ignoring the pilot reports or deciding for pilots how much equipment can fail or be unreliable before they 'agree' or decide to stop GPS jamming."

Yet another serious safety issue; by the same OM I reported a couple weeks ago; due to not doing a 'Stop Buzzer' call as per our facility standard operating procedures; SOP. Yesterday we had GPS jamming in effect with multiple aircraft on headings; aircraft turning on their own about 40 degrees and weather up to about 33000 ft. The OS (Operations Supervisor) called the OMIC (Operations Manager in Charge) to ask to stop GPS jamming due to controller workload issues. The OM and the OS then had an offline; not recorded; conversation about the issue. The OM played the '20 questions' game with the OS and decided to not make the 'Stop Buzzer' call to the proponent. Again; I would like to reiterate from my last report; the OMIC does not make the final determination to 'Stop Buzzer;' the OS/CIC (Controller in Charge) does. The only reason why the OMIC is referenced in the SOP directive is because they have the phone numbers for the proponent; and they are required to report on the network when they make the call. A little while later another CIC called the OM for the same thing. The OM again played 20 questions with the CIC; asking 'is this really a safety issue.' The OM then had an offline; unrecorded conversation about the jamming. The OM ultimately stopped the jamming but not after a long period of time where controllers were overworked and overloaded. This was [a] very unsafe situation that lasted way too long due to OM's inactions.The OM's continued disregard for safety and the agreed upon facility SOP is going to get someone seriousl…

On Day 0 at approximately XA00Z White Sands Missile Range (WSMR) began their GPS Jamming procedures that they conduct annually around this time of year. Typically GPS jamming exercises have less of an impact in the previous years than now. Working Sector 19 with westbound ELP departures with GPS jamming is becoming a real problem. Every single ELP departure during the GPS jamming exercise required a heading because they were unable to navigate. This increased the complexity of the sector drastically. On top of that; every single aircraft checking on into Sector 19 was inquiring about the issues with their ADSB and/or their GPS being unusable. This; in itself; created a lot of frequency congestion in the sector. Sector 19 also had areas of moderate-extreme precipitation affecting aircraft routing and navigation. The OS (Operations Supervisor) on duty at the time was standing behind me to overlook the sector because he knew that I was very busy. Even after seeing what was going on in the sector; the OS did not issue a STOP BUZZARD. I myself did not ask for it either; but it was very apparent that it needed to be done. Previous days and days after Day 0; Controllers had multiple issues with the GPS jamming exercises and requested a STOP BUZZARD. At one instanc…

We lost radar on Aircraft X; we were unable to climb him due to overhead traffic at 130. We were unable to give instructions to join the V484 due to the MEA being 160. Aircraft X was last seen on a heading to avoid a 123 MIA (Minimum IFR Altitude) box; but we lost radar monitoring capabilities. Aircraft X was ADS-B equipped; but we weren't receiving several ADS-B targets due to the jamming. As soon as radar contact was lost I went to my OS (Operation Supervisor) and asked for stop buzzer due to the situation. Instead of calling for stop buzzer the OS came over to our position; stood behind us and tried to give us instructions on what to do; all of which we were unable due to reasons listed above. The OS finally went to call for stop buzzer; by which time we reacquired radar on Aircraft X.Recommendation: OS should have accepted controller request for stop buzzerGPS jamming mission sheet with anticipated affect should be placed at the position; this used to be done …

Aircraft X was issued a descend via clearance for the RNAV arrival into ZZZ. The GPS jamming at Whitesands was effecting the safety of flight of the aircraft to the point to where they couldn't navigate safely. I asked the Controller in Charge to stop buzzer(ATC procedure to cancel GPS Jamming) and was blown off was told 'we're not doing that'. Refusing to stop buzzer is commonplace in ZAB; push back and peer pressure is common. At this same time another Controller had Aircraft Y between two pieces of restricted airspace deviating into restricted airspace. Having ZZZ Approach establish departing aircraft on jet routes or victor airways; to keep from violating restricted airspace. Have stop buzzer become an actual priority with the Controllers in Charge and Front Line Managers.

The crowd on Garvaghy is comprised of folks from the Palestine solidarity movement, human rights organisations, and even elected officials. People were put up in residents’ homes for the night and the community centre remained open for those who didn’t have shelters. There are more on the way.
