Umbrella crab! Cryptolithodes sitchensis.
A small flat, smooth, red, crab testing on a hand its eyes are visible but no legs. The underside of the same crab, all legs and now you can see that the shell, which is white on this side, extends well beyond the legs. The same crab in a tidepool, no real features are visible and it looks more orange underwater.

I think it’s kind of hack at this point to harp on about Harry Potter’s weak worldbuilding and pervasive lack of introspection but someone could make a good video essay comparing how house elves are treated by the story compared to The Ood.

Since May I presented in two conferences (with @thefsbi.bsky.social last week), sailed on two research cruises, and (somewhere among all this) passed my PhD confirmation. Looking forwards to some holiday this week, but I'm very excited and intellectually stimulated by how well the project is going!
Me presenting at the MidSEC conference in Sweden - I've blocked out some graphs to hide my beautiful beautiful data.Me in the hangar of the RRS James Cook, wearing wet-weather gear and a hardhat and making a hang ten gesture.Me wearing oilskins, a hardhat, and an inflatable life jacket, rushing across the deck of the RV Tom Crean with an anglerfish in my hands.Me presenting at the FSBI conference in Southampton. My title slide says "metabolic diversity of deep pelagic teleosts".

Two things: first, a reminder that people have been capable of impressive realist art for centuries and we should recognise stylisation for what it is Second, do you think it’s easier to draw/sculpt accurate fish because they stay the same shape when dead more than mammals and birds do?

Out on the RV Tom Crean and had a bit of a landmark day. Technically not my first angler, but this extraordinary, beautiful animal made me genuinely emotional. It’s an absolute privilege to get to meet these animals that I’ve adored for so long! (She’s a triplewart seadevil, Cryptopsaras couesii)
A female anglerfish Cryptopsaras couesii photographed in a plastic tray. She is kind of diamond shaped with a huge head and an upturned mouth. Her lure is long and extends out from her brow, tipped with a small black bulb. Her eyes are so small as to be near invisible. Her skin is satin textured and jet black.Me holding the same fish in my hands. I’m wearing yellow oilskins, a self-inflating life jacket, and a red hard hat, alongside a pleased-as-punch expression.

Something cool I realised about this video is that the belly is so distended you can see bits of the fish’s internal anatomy. Those finger like bits are the pyloric caeca, part of the gut used to absorb peptides, and I think the triangular bit might be liver?

I know I'm supposed to be fairly non-partisan as a biologist, but vent mining is just such a ludicrous idea (even compared to nodule & crust mining) - glad to see IUCN addressing it.

Rough day, so have a poem about the Jar of Moles in the Grant Zoology Museum in London that everyone has regarded as too thoroughly batshit to publish
Jar of Moles (Grant Zoology Museum, London)
crittery dozened things each pink snout snootling
formaldehyde up it's bamboozler which poor fuck
had to collect them out in the dirt with a shovel
here moley moley BONK . I’m only gonna
put you in a jar and let tourists go eww at you
for the next two hundred years god look at me
for two hundred years I’d do anything look
mummy, one of them’s licking the glass—
honey it's dead velvety sweet sardined hope
their ghosts are friends teeming in a molish
afterlife dark and circular everything worm-
flavoured tasty buggy snackerels what if
you smashed the mole jar? vinegared
moles spilling out flaccid & swimming
everyone screaming someone saying Freddy
you gotta get us a new jar of moles—
—goddammit boss I never asked for any of this
A jar of wet preserved moles, the jar is very full and all the little hands, feet and snoots mark it as both upsetting and fascinating

🌊 M.E. Blochii ... Systema ichthyologiae iconibus CX illustratum v.2 Berolini: Sumtibus auctoris impressum et Bibliopolio Sanderiano commissum, 1801. [Source]
Illustration of an eel-like fish labeled "Acantonothus Nasus," from an 1801 ichthyology book. The fish has a long, curved body with distinct dark bands across its textured, scale-covered skin. It features a pronounced, rounded head with a large eye and slightly open mouth showing small teeth. The pectoral and pelvic fins are detailed with fine lines. The tail is slender and tapers with visible fin rays extending along the underside. The image includes the artist's signature "J.F. Hennig" in the bottom left and the plate number "77" in the top right corner. The background is plain and beige.

The front slide of a presentation entitled "Metabolic diversity of deep pelagic teleosts revealed through otolith-based isotope proxy". The right side of the slide is taken up by a film image showing a diversity of deep pelagic fish on a white plastic surface.

Hastings museum had an LGBT history exhibit and there was a bit on a trans guy and a cis woman who married in 1954 that I found moving
UNCLE VIC & AUNTIE JOAN

Remi Graves

Victor Kenneth Jones and Joan Jones (née Lee) met in 1950 at a telephone exchange in Catford, where they both worked. Vic was 22 and Joan 17. They married on 25 September 1954 at St Luke's Church, Downham, with family, and friends in attendance. Joan's family supported their relationship and respected Vic's identity as a trans man. After a honeymoon in Hastings, the couple settled there.

In 1954, they were publicly outed and fined £25 each (around £900 today) for what authorities ruled an 'illegal marriage' because Vic was trans. They also became the subject of national newspaper coverage. Despite this, they lived together in Hastings until Vic's death in 1991. Joan remained in their home until 2023, when she passed away at 90.

The photos and objects on display were shared by Joel, Joan's nephew. After Vic's death, Joan gave him Vic's archive, asking him to do as he wished. Joel brought Vic's wedding ring to the Collective's 'Queer Lives. Queer Queer Objects' gathering in March 2025.

I was moved by the lasting love Vic and Joan shared and the quietly defiant way they built a life together on their own terms. ers a rare glimpse into the life a trans ma part Hastings in the mid-20th century.
