This is a very thorough and well written article. If you care about how Minneapolis responds to mental health emergencies, I encourage you to please read and share among your networks. AND reach out to your CMs. The next meeting in regards is Oct 7th.

My friend is trying to move from the middle of nowhere back in the metro after a terrible relationship ended. She doesn't have the funds but she's selling jewelry she's made and vintage jewelry. Perhaps you see something you like and you will spend money on it! Thanks! www.vugjewels.com

Absolutely worth watching committee meeting from yesterday. Spot on Qs from CMs highlighting number of concerns. Pls reach out to your CM. This choice by city is not being made for the community and council has the power to not move it forward.

The presentation is just starting so I am gonna go focus on that, but yes, very unclear why this is framed as a critique of CR. Their contract did not include follow-up services and they have pushed to do more of that. And yes, availability of those services much outside their scope.

here are some horrifying reviews of community bridges’ rehab in arizona. definitely seems like the type of carceral addiction facility you’d get with a board of majority law enforcement! and this is the organization the city of minneapolis chose to replace canopy roots for BCR?

The impact to the people being served will be felt as there likely will be inevitable gaps in service… possibly longer than the city accounted for, especially given this org has no presence here.

what the hell are “livability calls” and why do we need to create an additional category for these if they aren’t committing a crime and aren’t going through a crisis that would require BCR response? feels like a new and codified way to harass people existing in public and we know it will be

if the BCR program was created in 2021 to move away from police responding to non emergency mental health crises, why would we select community bridges whose board has 4 cops, heaviest profession represented? 3 firefighters. 2 city staff / electeds 1 addiction specialist. 1 psychotherapist 4 COPS

This is such depressing news. Canopy Roots' BCR was one of the few big innovations in public safety after 2020 that Minneapolis continued. I am skeptical that bringing in a new org from AZ is the right move.

This is a gutting betrayal of everyone inside and outside the city staff who worked to get this program, and of all the workers who made it run and made it into evidence that a non cop crisis response can exist in a city’s infrastructure.

It’s not too often I go days w/o thinking about Max Weber’s “the Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism.” Part of a theoretical foundation of how we got here, particularly in the role Calvinism and evangelicalism intertwines in this particular fascist social order.

So my day job includes budgeting for mental health and street outreach programs, which is to say I'm not speaking totally out of my ass on this. And $5m a year (as an average) is frankly a tiny amount for what we're trying to do with BCR.

I think it's clear that Frey's admin doesn't like BCR for all the reasons a guy like Frey wouldn't like it, mostly boiling down to policing. But it makes such a huge difference in so many ways, and if we get the opportunity to show up for the service and its workers, we should.

Don’t hesitate to come to the polls; DOJ monitors will be outside the 100-foot zone, you don’t have to talk, you also don’t have to freak out, if you see them talking to anyone before they vote (they can only do so after) or engaging otherwise, tell the precinct head judge. We’re trained to help.
