That’s the other thing that baffles me about AI and creative writing, actually. The work IS the joy for me. I don’t want to be able to snap my fingers and have a completed “product.” I want to be transformed by the process. I’m an author but I do this because I enjoy the rigor of being a writer.

Michael—my favorite poet of night, of envelopes, of trains, of kisses, of mistakes, of sleep, of houses & their porches, of dreams, of the small huge (the parenthetically cosmic), of night, of night, of porches & their light, of let me try again to tell you, of the moon
If in the Stellar Coast of Evening I Could
Only Know My Name
by Michael Burkard

I think I would hear the passengers,
I think I would hear the porch kiss the rain
(I know the rain kisses the porch,
that I can hear)…

I think I would stop hating thinking
which is the only feeling I know
which survives thinking even more lastly than thinking…

and if the car did go by with a messenger within
I could eat the somber message of my friend’s painting
and thereby turn it into
a light

by eating it, by feeling the ghost
is with me at last,
again,
as it must have been years and nights ago

when the rain and the porch were the same passenger
and I the train they chose to travel in.

it’s this poem
Miss you. Would like to take a walk with you.
by Gabrielle Calvocoressi

Do not care if  you just arrive in your skeleton.
Would love to take a walk with you. Miss you.
Would love to make you shrimp saganaki.
Like you used to make me when you were alive.
Love to feed you. Sit over steaming
bowls of pilaf. Little roasted tomatoes
covered in pepper and nutmeg. Miss you.
Would love to walk to the post office with you.
Bring the ghost dog. We’ll walk past the waterfall
and you can tell me about the after.
Wish you. Wish you would come back for a while.
Don’t even need to bring your skin sack. I’ll know
you. I know you will know me even though. I’m
bigger now. Grayer. I’ll show you my garden.
I’d like to hop in the leaf pile you raked but if you
want to jump in? I’ll rake it for you. Miss you
standing looking out at the river with your rake
in your hand. Miss you in your puffy blue jacket.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Let the tomatoes go to rot.
Let crickets and satin moths reign.
Nights, now, I draw the field shut behind my eyes.
When I return, weary, to the blaring sun, I am a candle fly
thrashing under drought.
Let the rain never come.
Let me walk away from every sorrow, every turnip
lost to wireworm and white rust until I am forested, mouthing the cobwebs of winter.

The Horniman Natural History Gallery features this stunning walrus. It was transported to England, purchased in 1886. There, the taxidermists, having never seen one in the wild, stuffed it until the wrinkles smoothed out. This is a fully inflated walrus, my friends. MAXIMUM WALRUS. (📷: Tom Natt)

I am so ridiculously pleased to share, finally, that I have a new novel coming out in about nine months called BEINGS and it's about aliens and loneliness and queerness and archives. Eee!
Publishers Marketplace deal report for my novel, BEINGS, being published by Bloomsbury. It reads:
Author of ALL MY MOTHER'S LOVERS Ilana Masad's BEINGS, braiding together an account of the first American alien abductees, who claimed to have encountered ETs in the New Hampshire mountains in 1961, with the letters of a forgotten lesbian science-fiction writer and the frantic observations of a modern-day archivist obsessed with both these stories, to Mo Crist at Bloomsbury, for publication in fall 2025, by Eric Simonoff at William Morris Endeavor (NA).

POEM by Jessica Poli
June
The illusion of control:
picking rocks from the field before the next pass of the tractor.
Still the blade breaks on the rototiller, the day grinds to a halt.
Smell of dust and diesel fuel beside the freshly stirring garlic patch, where last year we planted
what dregs of hope we had left from the spring:
Now the plants shoot out green spirals which, if left to grow, will burst into flower.
I spend a day going from plant to plant with a grasshook,
lopping off the soft heads,
while the parts of me that feel like an emergency prickle, threatening to bloom.

at too late a time no one can be on board such a ship— no one can kiss like you or the ocean approaching the rest of the night waiting world - Michael Burkard 🖤
WHAT COULD BE MORE THAN A KISS?
by Michael Burkard
a scent.
a stone alive at last
after being worried for god knows how many years,
a piano
won by the little boy
who picked the right number of fish in the sea.
another kiss.
followed by another kiss.
followed by the dark starlight of jesus
by the dark starlight of a ship too far at sea
at too late a date
at too late a time
no one can be on board such a ship-
no one can kiss like you
or the ocean approaching the rest of the night waiting world

PRAYER

My dog
who disappeared,
may you sleep soundly
in the form of this
cat I found, have
taken in to heal,
address as being in
league with you and
your form, until all
or much is mended. One of the first books of contemporary poetry I ever read was Ghost Machine by Ben Mirov, selected as the winner of the 2009 Caketrain Chapbook Competition by Michael Burkard. A little later I read the poem “The Selected Poems of Michael Burkard” in Mirov’s book Hider Roser:

Sadness is a kind of purity that Michael
Burkard uses to drain the darkness

from his fingertips. When droplets of rain
fall from the branches into the water
below it creates concentric ripples moving

outward into everything and cannot be stopped.
Michael Burkard is thinking about this poem
he won’t write until hours in the future

as he sits in his apartment, feeling like a ghost.

I knew almost nothing about contemporary poetry, except one thing: Michael Burkard was on the list of names. I bought his book Unsleeping and dove in.
