"Anchored in feminism, my art is informed by North and South American cultural forms that fuse and cross-pollinate. My practice is a bicultural and transcultural experience; it speaks of difference, of opposites: having grown up in Colombia and having migrated to the US as an adult. I make art in two languages about the experience of physically having moved yet remaining rooted in Colombia. I create visual expressions of that hybridity and syncretism that has taken place since the conquest of the Americas and that is replicated in the migration experience."

"During a time of intensifying carceral peril and state violence in the United States-a time when political rhetoric is distorting, erasing, and dehumanizing many groups of people in order to lay the groundwork for our incarceration and expulsion, a time when ICE is breaking records for deaths in custody-literature still offers us the power to write back, to testify, to offer an alternative version, to leave a different record, to archive our resistance. All of us are threatened when the foundational principles of a livable society are attacked.
Literature lets us say no. Lets us say something else entirely."

when i was born, there was a door in my heart that closed. this is not a metaphor. you had one too. from right to left, it let blood through. foramen ovale, a self-sealing hole open only in utero, before the lungs are used. two empty pink rooms. i want to know what it looked like in there, before breath moved in. birth as interruption. it was someone else's desire that put me here, across a boundary.

The people here leave me alone in the night. My body relaxes enough to go into the catheter, pass tension and pain they pricked all day and, finally, ease, slump, nap, laugh. Warmth as a solitary peace covers my chest, like a soft touch. My antennae nap. It is light, what the nerves do, to make up for pain and potholes from limb to limb, but I feel held, gripped gently, and it's enough. In their tiny currents, I am connected to something I cannot see, but l name it love.

older than all your dull words for pain.
I have healed and healed

Her first doctor's appointment was in a skyscraper she walked past every morning, the lobby all clean, pale stone, cool and well lit.

Song of the many when they cry together. // one of two new poems in the Summer @prairie-schooner.bsky.social! glad to have this ode to collectivity in the world. 💙
POETRY

Han VanderHart

alien & mechanic & uncanny

the cicadas' song, in May—
for a day, it sounds like machines
in town, this song of sex and freedom:
carapaces split and clinging to
the pines in the park—to sleep
so long, then climb out
of the ground ready to leap
into the world with a scream.
I am bathed in the pitch and
vibration, surrounded as a
child should be by care.
It is May, and my pelvis
cramps with ovulation.
This is too much truth
for some people, the way
the cicada is too much,
from nymph to screaming,
flying thing. Siren of the pines.
Song of the many
when they cry together.
