Gartner says that by 2030, 80% of neoclouds will have ceased operations, that AI data center owners would need to generate $8.5 trillion in revenue to cover the current spend and hit an ROIC of 12%, and that $4tr+ in assets face writedown risk by 2032. www.gartner.com/en/newsroom/...
By 2030, 80% of Neocloud Providers Are Expected to Cease Independent Operations
More than $3.5 trillion of AI infrastructure spending could be exposed to impairment by the end of 2030, if AI providers continue their current pace of capital spending, according to Gartner, Inc., a business and technology insights company.

“In 2026, AI providers are expected to spend nearly $1 trillion on AI infrastructure, and are forecast to invest an additional $6 trillion between 2027 and 2030,” said Will Sommer, Sr Director Analyst at Gartner. “However, our research indicates that enterprise and consumer AI revenue will be insufficient to support profitable returns on all planned AI capital expenditures during this period.”

“Through 2030, AI data center owners would need to generate a cumulative $8.5 trillion in revenue to cover announced capital spending, financing costs, and a 12% return on invested capital (ROIC), which we assume to be the hurdle rate of investment capital,” said Sommer. “However, total enterprise and consumer AI revenue that can be attributed to AI data centers during this period is forecast to reach no more than $3.6 trillion. Because most AI-native providers operate asset-light business models, we predict that less than half of AI revenue will be earned by providers that own significant AI infrastructure.”

Failure to achieve sustainable ROIC on rapidly depreciating assets would almost certainly necessitate write-downs. Based on Gartner projections, a continued AI infrastructure investment trajectory could leave more than $4 trillion in asset value exposed to write-down risk through 2032. In this scenario, Gartner does not expect the 12% ROIC to be achieved until the end of 2032 at earliest.

It's so funny how the Western civilization that Rubio, Vance and Miller champion would never have developed had their policies been in place back then. Also funny that the trade system driving the market cities like Bruges already depended on linkages to the Levant, India and East Asia.
Nor were the “nations” or foreign colonies simply informal groupings of friendly compatriots; they were tightly organized, like guilds, with their own chiefs (called consuls) and their own rules and means for enforcing them. … [T]he foreign colonies constituted a kind of extraterritorial authority, exempt from many of the customs of the host country and expected to maintain discipline over their own members. By the end of the Middle Ages there were some sixteen “nations” in the city of Bruges … In general, merchants from the various “nations” preferred to live on the same street or place, forming their own quarter in which they maintained their own national houses or consulates. The single men ate together, met socially, and often had their offices on the premises.

Mark Zuckerberg is a monster.
At least one AI company is thinking about monetizing its users' mortality. Last year, Meta was granted a patent for an AI system that could keep a user account active well after death. In the words of the patent, "the language model may be used for simulating the user when the user is absent from the social networking system, for example, when the user takes a long break or if the user is deceased". It's a depressing thought, the idea of posting for ever. It's also potentially lucrative for Meta, as the company could continue to train its model through these zombie accounts.

Casual reminder that Stuart Ritchie, a scientist who currently works in Anthropic’s comms department, once wrote this bizarre defense of Francis Galton, the racist godfather of eugenics.

I was pointed to Amodei’s essay via a tweet from Stuart Richie, a scientist and author who currently works in Anthropic’s communications department. Remarkably, in Richie’s book Intelligence: All that Matters, he describes Francis Galton, the godfather of eugenics, as someone who “would likely have been appalled to see the end results of the eugenics movement.” (p.102) Richie’s conjecture is hard to square with Galton’s statements that “the Jews are specialised for a parasitical existence upon other nations” and that “there exists a sentiment, for the most part quite unreasonable, against the gradual extinction of an inferior race”—to cite only two of Galton’s many racist and genocidal claims.

What is the Clean Wehrmacht myth? In short, it's the idea that the German military in WWII did not participate in crimes but simply fought a conventional war against its military enemies. Which is nonsense but is also one of the most enduring falsehoods in WWII history.
