Good and gutting. (No, really, it is very good—you should read it) David Perry, UMN student advisor, on what the university is for and how deeply the planned budget cuts will mess with that www.startribune.com/umn-cuts-sta...
And mostly, it’s worked out for the best. Even if we just assess for dollar value, a 2025 analysis found that for every $1 invested in the U, the state reaped $16.75. In other words, every Minnesotan benefits from our robust systems of public higher education.
It’s been striking to me that while conversation about the budget inside the U has been substantial, I haven’t yet seen Minnesotan politicians addressing these potential cuts as a crisis. Part of that is because public universities like the U have made a trade-off, growing increasingly corporate and independent (despite publicly appointed regents) as public funding has collapsed. As a share of the budget, state funding has plummeted over the decades, falling to about 15%, compared to 39% in 1997. If that’s what you want, then fine. But did we ever have a public debate about whether that’s what Minnesotans actually want?
If you don’t want to more significantly fund the university, which bits are you eager to cut away? If it’s instruction and student services, here’s what happens.

Agnes the screech owl. She copper colored with white streaks on her face and white patches on her belly. Her ear tufts are perked up and her attentive grey—blue eyes have noticed something in the distance. She’s a little guy so she’s cute as fuck. Got a birthday present in the mail from my brother yesterday. Were you aware that Macho Man Randy Savage recorded a rap album in 2003 and that you can get it on special edition vinyl? This is precisely what brothers are for.
Album for Macho Man’s album, Be a man. It’s a muscley ex wrestler holding chain for reasons that are not apparent. And here’s the actual vinyl. Is predominantly yellow with poorly done black and red streaks mixed in. And yes, it has another picture of macho man in the center label all muscley and holding chains.

Some academics used AI to write op-eds. I spoke @chronicle.com. Making complicated things legible to broad audiences is the whole goddamn work and no, you can't outsource it to LLMs. www.chronicle.com/article/prof...
But to David Perry, associate director of undergraduate studies in the history department at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities and the author of a book on public scholarship, using AI to “edit” or “condense” is synonymous with using it to write. Cutting down an article or generalizing it for a broader audience is “what writing and thinking is about,” he added.

“Writing complicated things that are accessible to a public audience and that are short enough for public-audience attention spans is hard — it is harder, in many ways, than writing at length and writing only for your 20 most compatible colleagues,” Perry said. “It’s just a practice. You have to decide to put in the work.”

The work of being an academic, Perry said, is to make complicated things coherent. Michael Socolow, chair of the communications and journalism department at the University of Maine at Orono, agreed, calling it a “cop-out” for a writer to say they “only” used AI for the basic mechanics of composition. He added that he’s concerned about what senior academics model for both junior academics and their students when using AI.

The real "administrative bloat" in education is the money that schools are being forced to fork over to tech vendors that can just keep jacking up their prices year after year, because it would cost even more to rebuild the systems and retrain the people that were built/trained on that tech.
