Reason 452 on why I like working at a university. I met a screech owl named Agnes on campus today.
Agnes the screech owl. She copper colored with white streaks on her face and white patches on her belly. Her ear tufts are perked up and her attentive grey—blue eyes have noticed something in the distance. She’s a little guy so she’s cute as fuck. Perched on her handlers glove with red brick academic buildings in the background.

Got a birthday present in the mail from my brother yesterday. Were you aware that Macho Man Randy Savage recorded a rap album in 2003 and that you can get it on special edition vinyl? This is precisely what brothers are for.
Album for Macho Man’s album, Be a man. It’s a muscley ex wrestler holding chain for reasons that are not apparent. And here’s the actual vinyl. Is predominantly yellow with poorly done black and red streaks mixed in. And yes, it has another picture of macho man in the center label all muscley and holding chains.

Today is the 40th anniversary of the Legend of Zelda. I had the "gold" version on the Nintendo. My favorite game ever. I don't game much, except for the Zelda games. Love them. It's also the 45th anniversary of me. I learned to that I share my birthday with the Legend.

I made a sketchnote syllabus video for the past few online courses. I start with an ink picture, and add color as I talk through the item. It’s not always pretty, but I think it’s a fun way to talk about some of the unique aspects of my classes in a unique way. Here’s the before filming and after.
Someone what incomplete sketch of the human learning syllabus. It has three parts: assignments, grading, and final project. It’s all in black ink and there’s are little sketches strewn about. The finished sketch note. There are now blue, green, and pink additions to the black text that give some drama and clarity to the syllabus outline.

Using my nerdy new mug my daughter gave me. 🤓 Got it from here: smbc-store.myshopify.com/products/goo...
Coffee mug with text printed on it. Says, “not significantly different from a good dad” which is a statistics joke. Mug with Normal distribution curve printed on it that has “good dad” in the middle, and “you” printed a little off center far from the two tailed critical region of significance testing.

A friend from Facilities brought this hat by for me that he made. It’s a sharp looking hat and a really kind gesture. While I do miss working from home, going to the office does have its perks sometimes.
Maroon trucker cap with a Stephens College seal hand punched onto leather and attached to the cap. Looks sharp!

My city does an annual Art in the Park. It’s always pretty great. I bought art.
I’m holding a metal sculpture in front of my face. It’s a pretty big moose head made out of a shovel, some hoes, spoons, wrenches, and other metal bits welded together. It’s amazing.

To the AERA reviewer who said my paper would benefit from a decision flowchart: message received and you were absolutely right. To the AERA reviewer who said they couldn't see any significance of my work: 🤪
Scale development process flowchart noting the decisions made along the way in three sections; design, test, explore. Starting from the beginning the first four are under the design heading: Theoretical framework, test blueprint, expert review, and cognitive interviews. The next section is test and has three headings: field testing, CFA with three factors, 3 models tested. The lest section is Explore with four headings: data driven exploration, EFA with cross validation, 24 items two factors, and relatedness & competence. Each of the eleven headings has a short description of the decision made.

Giving a workshop for students tomorrow on interviewing for jobs. I'm not sure which of these two slides is my favorite. But I do know that I appreciate being in a workplace where I can be me without second guessing myself.
This is a slide from a talk I will give tomorrow. Black background, magenta title that says, "Unsolicited Advice", and white text. There is an awkward closeup of a horse with its mouth wide open showing off its gnarly teeth. The four points of advice are: don't waste people's time, the aggravation to compensation ratio, wear something that makes you feel awesome, and work won't love you back. This is another slide form my talk tomorrow. A yellow background, with a tan French bulldog in banana pajamas with its nose in the air and an ear flipped out, giving the camera a hard side-eye. In big white letters, the text says "What do they ask in an interview?"

Help me out here as I’m not a beer drinker. I saw this beer RV on my drive home the other day. What, specifically, about an oiled up, roided out, 90’s Hulk Hogan in a banana hammock and knee-high boots waving a USA flag makes people want a beer? What. The. Actual. Fuck.
Apparently Hulk Hogan has his own “Real American Beer” company and this is the image on the back of the RV peddling this shit around town. The description is just horrible, but it in the text of the skeet and I can’t bring myself to type it’s hideousness out again.

One thing I DIDN'T accomplish in 45 minutes is to provoke conversation about study skills with their friends outside of class. If you hear something cool or wacky or helpful or cute, you tell your friends about it. I want to provoke some conversations outside the session around study approaches.
Only 35% of participants talked about their study habits with their friends after the session.
130
Jerod Quinn @jerodq.bsky.social · 18/09/2024
Takeaway 3: You can only accomplish so much in a 45 minute classroom talk. But holy hell, sometimes you do better than you think! I was NOT expecting change people's reported behaviors. But I needed to ask. The VAST majority of students reported that they tried something different after my talk. 🤩
60% of participants said they made a good faith effort at trying retrieval practice after the talk.50% of participants said they made a good faith effort at trying spaced practice after the talk.65% of participants reported changing how they take notes because of what they learned during the talk.85% of participants reported chaining some aspect of their study habits because of what they learned in the talk.

I think another help here was that I also acknowledged that cramming sessions work...if you are tested right away after the session. I think it was good to acknowledge that sometimes we don't prepare very well and get away with it. But to remember something over time takes repeated practice.
my slide of a nighttime road with cars zipping by that simple says, "Cramming leads to quick learning and quick forgetting."
110
Jerod Quinn @jerodq.bsky.social · 18/09/2024
Takeaway 2: Student know lots of study approaches, but not always which ones are more effective. In the open-ended feedback they mentioned knowing about study practices but the session helped clarify when to try what. One mentioned using the methods already but enjoyed learning why they work
I asked if retrieval practice was already part of their study routine. 25% said yes, and another 50% said sometimes. This is the pie chart breakdown of those responses.I asked if they used spaced practice before the talk. 20% said yes, and another 35% said sometimes. 30% said rarely and 15% said no. This is the pie chart breakdown of those numbers.

Jerod Quinn @jerodq.bsky.social · 18/09/2024
Takeaway 1: Practical is Good. I know a lot of CTL folks have a talk like this. I know the learning science is super cool to explore. But I'm not convinced students care about that. I focused on two things and made them dead practical. Retrieval practice and spaced practice. Ended with note taking.
Slide form my talk. Mentioned 2 best options as retrieval practice (with interleaving as bonus) and spaced practice (with scheduling as bonus). There the Mr. McMahon meme where he makes increasingly outrageous exciting faces until he bursts into laser eye mode. Starts with retrieval practice with definition, in your own words and examples, interleaving topics, and lastly with spaced practice.

I recently did a Study Skills workshop for a biology class of about 25 students. It was a prototype and I wanted to test some ideas to see if they might work. What's the point in talking about studying if nobody actually tries the advice? Got some feedback 2 wks later. Heres my 3 main takeaways
This is a slide from my talk. Graffiti wall with Albert Einstein sticking out his tongue with all kids of colorful tags around him. At the top my heading says, "Why study? Seriously."

I'm giving my What Goes Where? talk next week to a neighbor college. This will be good times. I get to meet new folks, have a little fun, and do some practical work about shaping Canvas to complement teaching approaches. And I get to use my favorite slide of all time. It's terrifying and amazing.
A slide with a vintage 1940's photo with the words in big letters at the top: ALWAYS DESIGNED.

The photo is of two older ladies sitar at a table set out like a British tea party with cakes and tea and snacks. But each side mirrors the other. The tea kettles and cakes, but also the women. Both in bright red suits, black ties, and black pill box hats. Both with curled up 1940's hair. Both even have the same penciled on eyebrows. It's really effin' creepy and yet wildly amazing.

Welp, in less than two weeks my plan to "play it cool" at the new job has come to an end. The real (i.e., "uncool") Jerod has arrived with the posting of my new office sign.
So the white text on the sign in Jerod Quinn, Center for Teaching & Learning. Pretty benign.

But the image is of a wild looking, sci-fi wizard professor with magical goggles and a HUGE curly beard and stars and planets orbiting him, with infinite bookshelves in the background. It is a Ai generated image from a colleague who asked Ai to generate a picture of a professor, and then he just kept telling it "make it more professor." This is the third iteration of "more professor" just before it went to the cosmic deity rendition.
