Aren't you
Tired
by Langston Hughes

I am so tired of waiting,
Aren’t you,
For the world to become good
And beautiful and kind?
Let us take a knife
And cut the world in two —
And see what worms are eating
At the rind.

Winter Poem

Nikki Giovanni

once a snowflake fell
on my brow and i loved
it so much and i kiss
it and it was happy and called its cousins
and brothers and a web
of snow engulfed me then
i reached to love them all
and i squeezed them and they became
a spring rain and i stood perfectly
still and was a flower

I knew I'd love this book, but this poem just destroyed me. @toddedillard.bsky.social needs to give a class on how to end a poem, and this is a prime example of why.
Arts and Crafts with the Addict's Son

One time I came home from school to a bedroom painted halfway two shades of blue, rollers beached in azure-scabbed trays, lidless quarts of midnight and noon separating from their water like souring cups of milk, my mother sprawled on the floor, her hands two lilies powdered with moonlight. But there was beauty too: my mother, high up on a ladder, nailing her wedding dress to a tree, divorce papers twitching in the yard like chickens pecking feed. For years the nailheads sparkled at night, bespoke constellations as the grackles harvested the dress for nest-scraps and a dozen Texan summers chewed through stitch and seam with their 92 jagged teeth. If there is to be any truth in beauty I can't just speak about suffering as if there isn't some good in suffering too.

As the coyote becomes mud for zinnias, so can these McDonald's receipts become a moon, greased napkins a banquet of clouds, crusted daubs of glitter glue every guiding star. A thousand miles from my origin my origin remains why I promise when I blue, I will completely blue. I will show you how you can make a sky out of anything.

I tried to say it was dead, the song,
but then it came, my mother singing
of cypress—

I tried to leave the literal,
but it got lonely—

I tried to leave desire,
but it scratched at the door, tapped
its empty bowl against the floor—

I tried not to answer,
but the bulb shone—

"Shuang-zi" is a pen name, lit. "twins" in Japanese. Before her twin sister and co-author Ruohui died at age 26 from breast cancer, Ruoci promised her that she would finish the novel they started together. #TaiwanTravelogue is therefore their joint work- which the name "Yang Shuang-zi" commemorates.
