i’ve transitioned my 9th grade ELA classes entirely to working on paper, and for a Friday treat, i’m planning dictionary races.

Yo. This is the union calling for a boycott. Here in America people like to say "Well I was already boycotting Starbucks!" No you were not. You were just choosing not to buy their stuff. That is not a boycott. A boycott is an organized, collective activity. "I" don't boycott: we do.

I love this Yiddish postcard celebrating Rosh Hashanah, I love the delicate subtlety of the family tablecloth that has been embroidered to read "Oh God, oh almighty God! Forgive our sins, forgive! Also please don't erase anyone in this house from the book of life!!"

seattle public schools wants to make unconscionable changes to special education. seattle education association is pushing back. yesterday, sps left the bargaining table. read more about how said changes would affect children here and educators, and email school board members, here: spsforkids.org

No one wants a strike. Here's how you can help.
SPS added a special education redesign into contract negotiations that would affect 170 jobs. Two emails.

Seattle, your public schools need you. SPS is pressuring union SEA educators to accept terrible contract takebacks: increased SPED caseloads, reduced planning time, and abysmally low pay for paraeducators and SAEOPS (school secretaries, registrars--the people who make it work!). We need your help!

I was bred for slaughter, like the other animals. To suffer exactly at the center, where there are no clues except pleasure. - Linda Gregg, “Whole and Without Blessing”
WHOLE AND WITHOUT BLESSING
What is beautiful alters, has undertow.
Otherwise I have no tactics to begin with.
Femininity is a sickness. I open my eyes out of this fever and see the meaning of my life clearly. A thing like a hill.
I proclaim myself whole and without blessing, or need to be blessed. A fish of my own spirit. I belong to no one. I do not move.
I do not need to move. I lie naked on a sheet and the indifferent sun warms me.
I was bred for slaughter, like the other animals. To suffer exactly at the center, where there are no clues except pleasure.

Another interpretation, beyond preferences for a small-town "lifestyle," is that when cities don't allow growth (often because of faux-environmental concerns about individual trees on private lawns), growth pushes to the fringes where it impacts actual forests. www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news...

While Seattle slows, the region’s fastest growth is on the fringes
Remote work is pulling growth away from the city and driving an exurban boom in fringe communities many Seattleites couldn't find on a map, writes FYI Guy.

Full text of Martha Zweig’s poem:

CHARM BEFORE SLEEPING

You are of my species
Against the ocean's inroads
Upon the ringed kingdom
Of recognition: among all
Mixed daily things I know you.

Whatever the dreams do, may
The constant bodily keeping
Involving us now within
The waking coincidence
Maintain you nearby, while we

And all who have held tight
Relax to sleep, and through these hours,
Difficult to remember, when death will
Undo each double helix and
Comb the loose strands, like the sea.Poetry magazine from January 1968. Dark blue or black, classic Pegasus, and the text:

It is in fact racist to call an Arab with views you disagree with an antisemite. I know this will be a surprise to many but unless that person is actually saying something antisemitic, the Arab is not genetically predisposed to antisemitism

*whispers* you know we can do this cultural debate about art thing all the time, right? Websites and news organizations used to have culture critics on staff whose entire job was writing about books, movies, and TV. People read them and then discussed them. We have the technology to do this again.

Elena Ferrante fiends (& friends), i have a new poem out in Poet Lore, in the On Devotion folio curated by brilliant poet @patrycjasara.bsky.social.
RACHEL EDELMAN
TO BEAR IT
after The Neapolitan Quartet by Elena Ferrante
Elena Greco can't stand
her mother's limp.
All four books see her body lopsided,
rabid at her children.
Elena and her friend keep eating
each other's egos, trading subservience in a shared self.
Elena scratches a line through time in one long press.
Virgil says toil is a glory to the gods; Elena despises her mother's suffering.
Chase Elena
chase refusal down to the lower senses.
A mother becomes her own ruin in making them fear her.
Elena gets books and men and revolutions
they exist until an ember burns out.
Elena accepts her own limp, doesn't go to the doctors.
She says it was so easy to tell the story without
what her friend poured into the crack. My mother was never one
to surrender
in view of her children.
Elena's friend accuses her
of trying to move back inside her mother's body.
Where my toes,
that smolder so slowly you forget
like my mother's, press
too close together, a nerve resists its current.
A hip-ward tremble.
Heat shivers out the edges.
The ember I place on the injury, trying to set it. The bones jostle.
A passing omen of cold.
