I have been inside 129 Illinois public libraries and don’t think I’ve ever seen anything like this in Sterling: three-story stacks with glass floors to let in more light, original to the 1904 Carnegie building.

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

A man replied to this saying in earnest that women need to get organized and fight for our rights and men will follow. We did that. We do that. We mobilized the largest single day protest in global history on every continent and yet I have fewer rights than my mom did at my age.

The literacy crisis is not just referring to people's ability to literally read and write. It's also people's inability to read for context. I've been a public educator for over 20 years and I have never, ever seen it this bad.

A crowded broadsheet with way too many fonts. It says:

Stretch them
Or cram a really long sentence into one line for no good reason
No whitespace
Mix capital and lowercase

Good 🧵 on recent fate mapping of mid-hindbrain boundaries using seperate lineage tracers, with authors concluding that we have two separately specified CNS regions. But we knew this for a couple decades now, and there is much more finessing of brain specification than simply “two brains”.

The folks who do believe this are taking the bait, all of it hook, line, and sinker. Libraries are not hurting sales. Folks not having enough money to function and flourish in a society that tells them to "pick themselves up by the bootstraps" (at least in the U.S.) is hurting book sales.

I’M HERE TO HELP is out Oct 27, and it’s full of rage that can’t be tamped down any longer. I'll summarize it as "A therapist finally loses her shit about the toxic men in her town." victoriahelenstone.com/books/
The book cover for I’m here to help by Victoria Helen Stone. The picture is of a woman sitting in shadows on a couch in a therapist’s office. There is a curtained window behind her and one lamp that is lit. The book sits on top of an open page. The page reads “this one is for the creators. AI can never replace you. It can’t replace the human heart and the stories that sing from it. Your podcasts and books and artwork and songs and essays helped inspire this tale. I hope you like it.“
