Many young people grow up in environments where regulation may not have been consistently modelled. This is where educational settings play a crucial role because this is the first place they experiences co-regulation & calm with an adult.🧠🌱

Neuroscience shows us that when the nervous system regulates first, then the brain can learn. School systems that support regulation builds learning environments. A school system that punishes dysregulation, will always create more of it 🧠🌱

When working with children & young people, true regulation begins from connection, not control. A calm predictable adult who can lower threat, model regulation, relational safety & allows the brain & nervous system to settle.🧠🌱

Casual reminder that the myth of “pulling yourself up by your bootstraps” is a cruel hoax designed to convince poor people from all walks of life that the injustices they face are a result of their own actions, rather than an oppressive system rigged against them.

The pro-European glee at rejoining Erasmus is understandable but also betrays a lack of self-confidence. It's tempting to be the reasonable ones against the Brexit headbangers but that also makes you easy to fob off. There isn't a softly, softly, nicey, nicey way back I'm afraid.

The depth of the shame of a country this wealthy and abundant allowing its people to go hungry is impossible to measure. The fact that a handful of people could fix this by paying their fair share of taxes while still remaining obscenely wealthy makes it even worse.

@yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk letter writer clears up the muddle: #ECHR European Court of #HumanRights & #EU European Union different bodies. ECHR nothing to do with #Brexit. Question motivations of those who object to ECHR: "Never give away #FreedomOfSpeech. Millions died for that."
This letter appeared in the Yorkshire Evening Post on 14 July 2025. The writer makes clear that the European Union (EU) and European Court of Human Rights (ECHR, or ECtHR) are different bodies. The motivations of anyone who suggests the UK should pull out of the ECHR should be questioned, says the writer. It is unrelated to Brexit.

Young people will still suffer if we do not address childhood trauma, and the intergenerational pain will continue. I've had enough of hurt children becoming hurt adults trapped in dysregulated nervous systems. We need to grow a nation of cycle breakers.🧠🌱 #traumaresponsive

When we are dealing with a dysregulated pupil, we can regulate them by the tone of our voice, how we listen to them, and our non-verbal signals, and they will be able to reflect our calm. This is called co-regulation. When one nervous system supports and eases another. 🧠🌱

A walk through Ludlow’s Broad Gate. The only survivor of the town’s original 7 medieval gates, which date back to the 13th century. You can still see slot for portcullis in the gate. It’s also still used by cars (whom I suspect don’t agree that it’s a broad gate 😆) #ludlow #ludlowtownwall #medieval

In consoling a friend recently, I put words to something I've felt since my first brush with loss but never managed to articulate: One of the hardest things about loss is the co-existence of grieving time with normal time, in ways that can be both comfortingly complementary and jarringly dissonant.

ACEs / trauma can have a profound impact on brain development. Neurobiologically,it impairs pre-frontal cortex activity responsible for executive functions regulating emotions, logic & judgement. This can lead to heightened emotional responses. Educators need to know this🧠🌱

The number of educators who do not understand the biological organisation of the brain & how this processes incoming information is unbelievable. I see this at my workshop presentations. We are in the business of developing brains. We need to know about this.🧠🌱

Trauma is at its worst when children have nowhere to run. They are exposed to things they shouldn't & learn to mask & present themselves & their world as fine until someone comes to save them. The abnormal becomes normal they normalise dysfunction because it is all they know🧠🌱

A brains top priority is safety. So, it is biologically impossible for a pupil to process or absorb information if they are overwhelmed or in a state of stress, worry, or anxiety. Without safe, predictable, attuned, emotionally available adults, development & attainment will suffer.🧠🌱

If you grow up in an environment that does not provide secure attachment, your life is then about survival because your nervous system prioritises safety over connection. This damages your ability to attach to other people & shapes the way you view the world as unsafe.🧠🌱
