As someone who works on regs, every reg has a story. Long term care facility rules state how much toilet paper a resident gets. The director of the lab testing for mold in marijuana must have a science degree. The sperm bank has to keep records. The child care must sanitize surfaces.

Parents who do not support the MAHA movement are nearly twice as likely as MAHA parents to say it is “very” or “somewhat” important for children in their community to be vaccinated for COVID-19 (52% vs. 28%) and 20 percentage points more likely to say it is important for children to be vaccinated for the flu (64% vs. 44%).

While most MAHA and non-MAHA parents report confidence in the safety of MMR and polio vaccines, MAHA parents are less likely to be “very” confident.

About four in ten MAHA-supporting parents (42%) say the CDC recommends “too many” childhood vaccines, more than twice the share of non-MAHA parents who say the same (17%).

My book on the Clean India Mission (Swachh Bharat Abhiyan) has been with the publisher for about 3 years--in great part because editors are concerned about libel and BJP mobs. To be fair, I'm less of a target, but MAN, there are some pieces I wish I could keep.

On the patio of the Delhi Press Club, surrounded by predominantly older men drinking dark liquors and coolly discussing politics, I sat with a couple of journalists and a historian. Sipping my own glass of scotch, I absorbed my companions’ passionate discussion about some recent student protests and the different threads and actors this debate had pulled in.
‘How would you describe the RSS to someone who has no idea who they are?’ I asked one of the journalists.
He gestured with his drink. ‘Take the R off,’ he said. ‘That’s what they really are.’

Because my husband is a big dam nerd (spelled correctly), we visit dams while camping. Paonia in CO--earthen dam constructed in 1962. Workers had to rapel down the cliffs on the left to blast out rubble which was used to build the dam. (Pre-OSHA, so THAT'S fun.)

This story demonstrates why vaccination isn’t a decision that only affects an individual. Refusing to vaccinate can have fatal effects on someone you’ve never even met. Renae got measles because vaccination rates had dropped in her neighborhood and she was too young to get the measles shot.

Rather than wishcasting a version of the administration that *they know does not exist,* researchers should be calling for caution. Slow down. Clearly define UPFs, gather data on their health impacts and explore what effective regulation would look like. Don't fall for MAHA's manufactured urgency.
