The beautiful art of tissue packaging. It would be just what the great masters would have wanted.
Four images from Tempo tissue paper packaging. It includes, Vermeer's Girl with the pearl earring and The Milkmaid, La Grande Odalisque and the Mona Lisa.

On this, currently in Hong Kong. I'd like to top up my travelcard digitally, but the machines only accept cash. So I now need to get cash from a cash machine so I can pay it into another machine to convert it back to digital currency.

Given the number of times I have to refresh at each stage, I am amazed that anyone has got through to book their events. Some slots are fully booked already.

It turns out that speck of dust that I can't remove from my camera lens was good for capturing a partial eclipse #eclipse
A tiny green crescent in the bottom left corner floating over a river. The Tate Modern is in the background along with a Thames Clipper. The background is quite gloomy because 95% of the sun is covered up

The most middle class London booking clash possible. Both the British Museum's out of hour slots for members for the Bayeux Tapestry and Open House weekend bookings are happening over the same lunchtime next week.

I updated my total eclipse webcam viewer for today's eclipse! Once totality begins you'll see a live-updating umbra, so you can race to the next webcam and see the eclipse happen over and over again. jonty.github.io/2026_eclipse...

Business idea: AI-written novels, but solely to provide a literary basis for planning objections to major infrastructure projects. ('You can't build that windfarm there, that's the site of Lisbeth's tumulus from the cult novel 'The Bee Keeper of Maidstone'.)

I think this gets at the heart of why I find the push for these types of AI so annoying. It turns into just meaningless words as we know the AI bot won't actually feel the same way. But maybe the direction of our world is just a sea of meaningless words and I'm just behind.

Thought the BBC might have made a bigger deal out of the move out of Maida Vale. I think I got to go twice in around 2002 just as an audience member. Once was to see Super Furry Animals (no photos) and the other was for Shifty Disco 5th birthday John Peel celebration.

The Museum of English Rural Life (MERL) @themerl.bsky.social · 16/07/2026
There's a lot we can learn from museums. For example: imagine how much better England would have been last night if there had been a dry-stone wall in front of Pickford's goal.

Was at Kew after hours this evening, which started late because they were struggling to open the door. The queue to the gate was very orderly. The most British thing was when everyone cheered after they finally managed to unlock the door.

Hopefully more than 12 people will see this. I didn't appreciate growing up in Oxford how lucky we were to have Nightshift compile what's on and support the music scene. I assumed everyone had their own version. I love that there is a detailed gig guide even in the last issue.

I can't believe Nightshift is finally ending. I had a rare weekday off in Oxford last week, and it felt so homely to find a stack of these in Common Ground and to be able to read it there. Without it I don't think I would have gone to as many gigs as I have.
Copy of Nightshift magazine still printed in black and white after all these years.

People don't like change particularly if someone is telling them to change. Though if a technology comes along that is quite useful people will use it and it can happen quite quickly too (see streaming replacing TV viewing)
