The timeless beauty of ancient glass! This Roman glass scent bottle is around 2,000 years old, yet its elegant design feels surprisingly modern! British Museum 📷 by me #Archaeology
My photo shows a small Roman scent bottle made of cobalt-blue mould-blown glass in the form of a scallop shell. At the top it has a cylindrical neck with an out-turned rim. There is a thin, curved, handle either side of the neck. The top of each handle is attached to the neck, and the bottom is attached to the top of the scallop shell. Bottle dimensions: height 8.5 cm, diameter 5.2 cm. Dated AD 25-100. It is displayed on a circular, clear perspex (?) stand in a British Museum display case. The bottle was bequeathed to the British Museum by Felix Slade in 1869.

Wonderful ancient artistry! About 40,000 years ago, this small, graceful horse figurine was carved from mammoth ivory! Imagine the #IceAge artist at work, sitting by the warmth of a fire, creating what is the world’s oldest known figure of a horse! 📷 by me #FindsFriday #Archaeology
My photo shows a profile view of a small horse figurine with head to the left, displayed against a dark background. Sculpted from mammoth ivory, the surface is a mottled greyish-earthy-brown colour with a shiny patina. It was once likely off-white in colour. The head is gracefully lowered with a long and elegant curving neck, and a convex curved back. The four legs are incomplete. The top of the tail remains. The eyes, nostrils, and mouth are carved as indents. It measures a mere 2.5 cm in height, 4.8 cm width, and 0.7 cm depth.

The 'Vogelherd Horse' was excavated in 1931, together with a number of other ivory animal figurines from the Vogelherd Cave, Swabian Jura, Germany. It is the oldest known sculpture of a horse. On display at the Museum of Ancient Cultures, at Hohentübingen Castle, Tübingen, Germany.

This small blue perfume flask from Jericho, in ancient Canaan, dates back to 1650–1550 BCE. Cosmetics and toiletries were highly valued in many ancient societies, with both men and women wearing eye make-up and using perfume, and even using various forms of hair dye. #ancient #artwork
The city of Jericho derives its name from the Canaanite word 'reah', meaning fragrant. The shape and decorative glazing of this flask reflect the influence of ancient Egypt on Canaan, who by this period (the Late Bronze Age) enjoyed a thriving trade with their Mediterranean neighbours.

Here’s an ancient amber bear to wish you a happy weekend! Carved some 10,000 years ago, it washed up on a beach at Fanø in Denmark from a submerged Mesolithic settlement under the North Sea. National Museum of Denmark, Copenhagen 📷 by me
My photo shows a small figurine of an amber bear carved some 10,000 years ago during the Danish Mesolithic period. The bear is seen in profile facing right. The legs are incomplete. The ears, muzzle, and mouth are defined. The figurine is displayed on a small metal stand. The display lighting shines on the bear’s head and neck enhancing the translucence of the orange coloured amber. The neck of the bear has a polished groove suggesting it was once suspended on a cord. Length 6.5cm.

It was found in 1991 on a west coast beach of the Danish North Sea island of Fanø.

It is one of a small number of amber animal figurines from the Baltic Sea region which have been assigned to the Mesolithic period by means of a typo-chronological approach.

Beautiful Merovingian brooch of the ‘Lady of Quaregnon’, AD 660-670. Found during excavations ahead of construction works at the Grand Place, Quaregnon, Belgium, in 2008-2009. Gold, silver, copper-alloy, garnet, and glass. Diameter 5.6cm. 📷 by me #FindsFriday #Archaeology
My photo shows a decorative gold brooch against a black background. The gold front plate is attached to a copper-alloy core by 8 silver rivets (not seen). The surface of the gold plate is ornately decorated with looped gold filigree, At the centre of the brooch is a circular blue glass cabochon set in a raised gold cell encircled by cloisonné garnets. Radiating out from the central blue glass cabochon are curved sections inlaid with cloisonné garnet like rays of the sun, forming a swirling pattern on the surface of the brooch. The 71 inlaid garnets come from Bohemia. Around the outer edge are four smaller round blue glass cabochons each set in a raised circular gold cell, alternating with four small square-shaped pieces of green glass set in raised square gold cells, at regular intervals. Overall, the piece is symmetrical, richly colored (gold, red, blue, and green), and highly ornate.

This ornate brooch was found during the 2008-2009 excavations ahead of major renovation works at Grand Place in Quaregnon. The excavations uncovered a small Merovingian cemetery. The brooch comes from the tomb of a 7th-century female known as the ‘Lady of Quaregnon’. In addition to the brooch, her other items of jewellery included a necklace, bracelet, copper-alloy pins, and a pair of copper-alloy bow brooches.

A little bear figurine carved out of amber some 6,000 years ago 🐻❤️ A hole runs through the bear’s torso suggesting it was threaded on a cord, perhaps worn or carried as a protective charm. Found in a peat bog near Słupsk, Poland, in 1887. 📷 National Museum in Szczecin #FindsFriday #Archaeology
Photo by G. Solecki/A. Piętak of a small figurine of a bear carved out of amber between 9600 and 4100 BC. The amber is a deep translucent orange. The display lighting makes it glow in places. The bear's head is carved to show ears, mouth, nostrils and eyes. A hole runs through the bear’s torso, suggesting it was threaded onto a cord. Dimensions: Length 10.2 cm, Height 4.2

It was discovered in Słupsk during peat mining in 1887.

According to the museum catalogue ‘’Shortly after its discovery, the figure underwent conservation work to restore its original appearance as it was covered with a layer of dull patina from the exposure to the minerals contained in the peat. Already at that time, at the end of the 19th century, it was assumed the restoration had gone too far. The figure was stripped entirely of patina, the anatomical features of the animal were emphasised, the eyes and nostrils were sharply drawn, and the amber was carefully polished”.

In 2013, a competition was organised by the Education Department of the National Museum in Szczecin, for children to choose a name for the bear. The winning name was ‘Słupcio’,

Carved details include muzzle, nose, eye, raised ears, and cross-hatching on the neck to indicate a mane. The ivory is a light creamy brown in colour with a surface sheen, and darker patches caused by time spent buried in the ground. It is displayed against a dark background.
