A galactic house of mirrors 🌌🪞 Webb has captured this spectacular view of the galaxy cluster MACS J0454.1-0300. Its gravity is warping & multiplying the images of background galaxies, which appear like they have stepped into a house of mirrors! Read more 👉 www.esa.int/ESA_Multimed... 🔭 🧪
A massive galaxy cluster, made of many golden elliptical galaxies with the largest, brightest one in the centre. Heavily distorted orange galaxies appear all around the cluster, the largest concentrated in a large arc around the cluster's centre; these are images of very distant galaxies, created by gravitational lensing. A few galaxies are large and bluish-white in colour; bright, nearby stars are the same colour. Credit: ESA/Webb, NASA & CSA, L. Furtak, S. Fujimoto

64 years ago, on the 27th of September 1962, Rachel Carson's book Silent Spring was published. It handled the environmental harm caused by the pesticide DDT and the disinformation spread by the chemical industry. Carson managed to sway public opinion and even policy. #otd #history 🗃️

Despite opposition by the chemical industry and lobbyists (such as Monsanto), Carson's work influenced the ban of DTT for farming and the creation of the EPA. Carson was called a communist by opposition and ‘a spinster with no children.’

1777: Distant lightening. We had but little rain, only the skirts of the storm. The dry weather, which was of infinite service to the country after so wet a summer, might fairly be said to last eight weeks: three of which had no rain at all, & much sun-shine. Some of the store-wethers on this...

'Roofs, High Holborn.' (1937) Lily Joseph's view was painted from her studio in Bedford Row looking towards the Old Bailey. Her palette was almost exclusively of white, cobalt, rose madder and the rare orange madder. In her day, Lily was a noted Suffragette.

111 years ago, on the 21st of September 1915, Cecil Chubb bought Stonehenge for 6600 pounds. He donated it to the state three years later on a few conditions, including a maximal entrance fee of one shilling. English Heritage takes wage inflation into account to calculate the current price. #otd 🗃️
