All summer I've been anticipating a VERY colourful autumn - much more sunshine in Scotland than usual, means more sugars that then turn into the anthocyanins which in turn, give leaves red and purple pigments.

Good to back on the wheel again today. A wonky teapot from too soft reclaimed (last years disasters and trimmings) clay. I had no right managing to do this after not touching the wheel for 8 months. #potter #pottery #ceramics #AmatuerPotter #Clay #Wheel #wheelthrown
My pottery “season” is April to September (pottery shed is not freezing then) but I’ve started a bit late this year. I try to run a zero waste pottery, all disasters are recycled back into throwable clay, so the first job each year is taking all of last years minging slop bucket contents and reconstituting it into a usable lump. 9kg of it this year, horrible job, but done last weekend and today I got back on the wheel for the first time in 8 months or so. Usually I start with a cup, which collapses and gets recycle again as I try to remember how to throw.

This year though I dove straight in and amazingly managed to throw a tea pot from my first kilo of clay which wasn’t really firm enough yet to do anything this ambitious with. A round bellied out jar form (not perfect but not bad for a first go) with galleried lid, a lid with a closed form knob thrown in one piece, and a spout from 100g of the trimmed off and rewedged, and by now very soft, lid clay. Nothing went in the bucket, hard to believe. Maybe this is going to be a good pottery season! Assembly, trimming and handle pulling next in a couple, of days.

Nice to get back into it

A transportation back in time, reminding me of my mothers story (see Alt Text) www.AndyMacD.co.uk #landscape #photography #LandscapePhotography #fineart #Scotland #nature
Out for a wander with my mate Tim of Irisone photography last month, we got the perfect amount of see haar rolling up the Forth - I don't really think of this as a landscape image but the image felt important to me, rolling me back in time as a poignant reminder of a story my mother told me.

My mother remembered the 16th of October 1939, when the first dogfight of WW2 took place above the beaches at Aberlady. She was a 7 year old evacuee, and was with her 5 year old sister on the beach, with bullets from the planes riddling up the sand just a few yards from them as they ran for cover. Imagine that grim and frightening realisation that the war was real, for two wee girls. The German fighters were shot down, and my Mum remembered a local proudly wearing the wrist watch of one of the pilots who had "greatfully" given him it for rescuing him from the waters of the Forth. Other airmen weren't so fortunate. Rosyth was bombed during that attack and the first casualties in Britain occurred but it was kept out of the papers, in case it damaged morale. It's always amazed me, that my mother was just a couple of yards from being that first unlucky statistic. Playing on the beach, thankfully dodging the bullets...

A bit of an older one this, taken on my first DSLR - my trusty Canon 40D. Prints out plenty big. By golly I was keen back then - 3am I got up for this one on my first visit to the Quiraing in 2013. 3 am!!!! www.AndyMacD.co.uk #landscape #photography #LandscapePhotography #fineart #Scotland #nature
Getting up near mid summer at mental o'clock to get a picture of the Quiraing on Skye at sunrise. Full of energy and optimism back in 2013 I actually made myself ill on this trip, through lack of sleep and picking up a virus, but I kept soldiering on taking pictures.

I wouldn't do it now - I'd go in the winter and hope I can get some sleep.

A prominent lone tree, behind the ruins of an old sheep pen as sunset approached.

Unrushed landscape photography in predictable and stable conditions - is this what it feels like for landscape photographers outside Scotland? Landscape photography here is typically frantically adjusting to changing light and weather while trying to keep the camera dry and the photographer warm.

I wouldn't have it any other way, it's so educational and exhilarating, but now and then it's lovely to be able to slow down and drink it all in.

Familiarity. I’ve looked at this scene often, knowing I wanted light on the viaduct. So zooming past, I took a moment just to check & there it was. www.AndyMacD.co.uk #landscape #photography #LandscapePhotography #fineart #Scotland #nature #風景写真ふうけいしゃしん #スコットランド #Escócia #FotografiaDePaisagem
The viaduct near Mallaig, every time I pass I stop and consider its potential. I knew that it just needed some light in the right place, so when I was in a rush and passing by, late for a ferry, I took just a minute to check it out. There was the light that had been missing all the times before. I had to shoot it. So I did.

And I still made the ferry.

This image got shortlisted in one of the national Landscape Photographer Of The Year competitions (though I can’t remember which one right now), so it was worth the 3 minutes it took to grab it 😁

As the years pass I’m getting worse and worse at heights, but I think I’m still OK enough for now. This taken from a swaying rope bridge, high above a gorge, while leaning out over the rope on the side. www.AndyMacD.co.uk #WaterfallWednesday #landscape #photography #fineart #Scotland #nature
The only way to get this shot was to hold my camera at arms length, while leaning over the rope that formed the edge of the somewhat “ bouncy” rope bridge at Corrieshalloch Gorge. A slowish shutter speed was hard to get hand held, but after quite a few goes, I got a sharp one. I’ll admit I was quite glad to move on.

Loved the contrast of leaf colour and rock. It had to be done.
