Role of endopeptidases in lateral cell wall expansion in Escherichia coli

Role of endopeptidases in lateral cell wall expansion in Escherichia coli
The Escherichia coli bacillus morphology is thought to be determined by the shape of the peptidoglycan macromolecule, although the underlying polymerization mechanism remains elusive. Anoyatis-Pelé et al. show that lateral cell wall expansion at a constant diameter depends upon the endopeptidase-dependent insertion of single glycan strands into the peptidoglycan mesh.

Have you ever seen an E. coli coccus? 🦠 We showed that endopeptidases are essential for the "one-at-a-time" expansion of the side-wall, although they are all dispensable when MltD is overproduced. Great work from @canopele.bsky.social and a big thank you to C. Morlot's team for the collaboration!

Staphylococcus aureus exploits lipoic acid salvage to combat host oxidative stress

Staphylococcus aureus exploits lipoic acid salvage to combat host oxidative stress
Acosta et al. find that ADP-ribosylation of the lipoic acid carrier protein GcvH-L promotes Staphylococcus aureus resistance to oxidative burst and facilitates infection. ADP-ribosylation leads to a structural shift within GcvH-L that safeguards lipoic acid sulfhydryls from detrimental oxidation and regulates its transfer to enzyme complexes required for growth.

#microsky We challenge the long-standing view that peptidoglycan alone protects cells from bursting. Our study shows that the periplasm — enclosed by OM–PG connections — acts as a pressure buffer essential for osmoprotection in Gram-negative bacteria. 📄 www.nature.com/articles/s41...
