There is a moment at the very very end of Abdul El-Sayed's podcast with Ezra Klein (book recommendation section) where he talks about the idea of "speaking truth to pain" and this will be staying with me for an extremely long time. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/25/o...
But there’s also something about truth to pain. We talk a lot about truth to power, but I think it’s actually a lot harder to speak truth to pain. I say that as someone who went to medical school, realizing that in a lot of our politics right now, we’ve got to get a lot better at speaking truth to pain if we’re going to get through some of these challenges that we have.

What does “truth to pain” mean?

It’s one thing to look power in the eye and say: You’re wrong about this. But there’s a way in which pain is very difficult to reason with. Because when somebody is in their pain, they’re in their trauma. They see that pain, and they may not see what’s causing it.

I remember just very explicitly being in a trauma ward with a gunshot wound patient and watching this big guy with his hand on his gunshot wound. All the folks are trying to pull his hand off his pain, that point of his gunshot wound, this clear vulnerability.

And this emergency room doctor had the presence of mind to be like: Everyone, stop. And she looks him in the eyes, and she’s like: I get that really hurts, and I’m so sorry that you’re here. You don’t want to be here. We don’t want you to be here. But if you don’t let us fix this, you could die. So I’m going to take your hand, and I’m going to move it off, OK? Because I need to get there so that you can live.

She was speaking truth to pain. He understands he’s at the hospital, he needs care, but he also doesn’t want anybody to touch the wound. Which is a natural thing. And I think it is a really great metaphor for how we think about a lot of these challenges we talked about today.

They're literally trying to crash the system. There's no other explanation. Millions of people will lose their health insurance despite being model customers. Premiums will skyrocket. In the end, only the rich will be able to afford even the most basic healthcare. This is what Republicans want.

Chronic illness and long-term unemployment have taught me a lot of hard lessons, mostly about how much sheer effort it takes to even begin to access public assistance. The endless phone calls, emails, appointments, paperwork... I have nothing but respect for anyone who manages to navigate it all.

People seem to think that a novel is just a bundle of ideas, and that the execution of those ideas doesn't really matter as long as the final product is vaguely legible. But like, obviously that's not true? A novel is, first and foremost, the words on the page. That's how the reader experiences it.

A good read. American institutions like to bang on about the budget as an excuse not to help people, but then they insist upon cruelty even when kindness is more economical. I've been noticing that more and more these past few years.

I will forever admire Wendell Berry's insistence on living his values through to their natural conclusions and relentlessly ripping through layers of politeness and habit to hold up for judgment those who do not.
Questionnaire
by Wendell Berry

How much poison are you willing
to eat for the success of the free
market and global trade? Please
name your preferred poisons.

For the sake of goodness, how much
evil are you willing to do?
Fill in the following blanks
with the names of your favorite
evils and acts of hatred.

What sacrifices are you prepared
to make for culture and civilization?
Please list the monuments, shrines,
and works of art you would
most willingly destroy

In the name of patriotism and
the flag, how much of our beloved
land are you willing to desecrate?
List in the following spaces
the mountains, rivers, towns, farms
you could most readily do without.

State briefly the ideas, ideals, or hopes,
the energy sources, the kinds of security;
for which you would kill a child.
Name, please, the children whom
you would be willing to kill.

truly a spark spilt Wisława Szymborska, tr. Agnieszka Salska
Magic is passing away though forces
still exist. On August nights
you do not know if it's a star falling down or what.
And you do not know if that's what ought
to go down. And is it proper still to play wishing games,
see omens? In the astral mistakes?
As if it was still not-the-twentieth century?
Which flash shall swear to you: I'm a spark just spilt,
truly a spark spilt from the comet's tail-lights,
nothing but a spark vanishing behind the cloud-
it's not me who's falling into tomorrow's headlines,
it's that other star whose engines are out.
