I was happy to see an honest review of lesson planning with "AI" in the cover article from this MTLT. I was thrown by the somewhat contradictory presentation in the journal. Maybe the partially completed progress bar is intended to imply that we are not there yet, despite the directive title.

In the new 2026 CSTA standards, each includes a "Students are not expected to" to help understand what the standard is not. So, what are students not expected to "understand", "apply" or "build"? "math" appears in 31 of the standards! In 27 of those, it appears after "Students are not expected to"

Guess the year! There are some hints in there. "We must teach people not to think of technology as an authority figure. Without mathematical understanding people of the twenty-first century will be victims of computer mysticism". Bruh, math educators failed so hard at this... 😭

Some have suggested that because we have computers and calculators, people no longer need basic skills. Others say that we need all the skills we ever needed and computers can be used to teach those skills. Still others believe that technology must be withheld from students so they will learn the important basic skills. I believe that advanced technology requires us to know more and different mathematics. Computers can arrive at completely fallacious results if improper assumptions are used
in programming them. Insurance agents, car dealers, banks, and others have been known to use specially programmed computers to beguile customers.
Computers and even calculators can produce mathematical nonsense at a much faster rate than people have ever been able to do in the past.
Educated people must understand sufficient mathematics to be able to
recognize absurd mathematical statements and understand that mathematical statements generated by computer are no more likely to be valid than those coming from a human being. We must teach people not to think of technology as an authority figure. Without mathematical understanding people of the twenty-first century will be victims of computer mysticism.

We recently looked at the very user-friendly Forced Expiratory Volume (FEV) data set as an exercise in data slicing and visualization: colab.research.google.com/drive/1u7qb6... Got an excited message from a student: "We think we can show that smoking is good for your lungs!" #ITeachmath #mtbos

"AI Literacy" means being a good tech consumer. This is user acquisition, connecting students with products as young as possible. It is data collection and surveillance. What will this program look like? They don't know yet. The goal is to push product. Education is secondary at best here.

In #MathsToday we modeled CO2 concentration as reported from gml.noaa.gov/webdata/ccgg... One student got quite close to capturing the seasonal fluctuation with: a sin(bx +c) + d + ex +fx^2

Linear regression on CO2 data displays slope of 1.66

Quadratic regression on CO2 data with quadratic term 0.01346

Atmospheric CO2 data with a model plotted that nearly matches the data. There is noticeable phase offset in the center of the plot.

I searched @nctm.org pub archives for 'computing', 'programming', 'monte carlo', and some others. Then I scrolled a few thousand pages looking for articles that contain code in them. This is what I've found so far. #ITeachMath #mtbos

In #mathstoday (last week) we investigated several datasets. Students generated data questions, including one about what makes YouTube videos more popular. This plot made for a lot of great discussions about causation! #ITeachMath #mtbos

All robots have simple things they struggle with. This includes software chatbots. But in the real world robots fall over and break. In software we just run it again and again until we get an output we like and then forget all the work we put in to correct bad results and call it revolutionary.

In #MathsToday (tomorrow) we are looking at the results of the 2025 Rubik’s WCA World Championship. All of my Data Science students know how to solve a Rubik's cube (it was our first assignment), so they emotionally invested in these tournaments 🤣. We'll look at rankings using different averages.

The Rubik’s WCA World Championship 2025 took place at the Seattle Convention Center on July 6, 2025. The sixteen finalists are listed in the DataFrame below, along with their country and their times from five rounds of solving.
