Definitely @oscarlevin.com's book, which I have used in my data science course. I have the 3rd edition which I am partial to (discrete.openmathbooks.org/dmoi3.html). Are there any particular topics? I think that there tend to be good texts on discrete topics with plenty of good exercises.

I appreciate the authors not over-anthropomorphizing chatbots, although there were multiple times where they referred to a chatbot making assumptions or choices. I would avoid describing text-generation this way since, at times, it seemed to imply a level of metacognition the software does not have.

Was the highlighted text on page 2 a pull quote? Because I'm not seeing where the authors wrote this sentence, and it sounded like the authors concluded that K-12 teachers *cannot* reliably prompt ChatGPT to create more ambitious, student-centered mathematics lessons...

A more appropriate title would have been "Don't Lesson Plan With AI", considering the authors describe the results in the introduction as "less than inspiring" and conclude that "we do not think AI is ready to be used in this way" after pointing out several unresolved issues. #ITeachmath #MTBOS

I was happy to see an honest review of lesson planning with "AI" in the cover article from this MTLT. I was thrown by the somewhat contradictory presentation in the journal. Maybe the partially completed progress bar is intended to imply that we are not there yet, despite the directive title.

In the new 2026 CSTA standards, each includes a "Students are not expected to" to help understand what the standard is not. So, what are students not expected to "understand", "apply" or "build"? "math" appears in 31 of the standards! In 27 of those, it appears after "Students are not expected to"

Guess the year! There are some hints in there. "We must teach people not to think of technology as an authority figure. Without mathematical understanding people of the twenty-first century will be victims of computer mysticism". Bruh, math educators failed so hard at this... 😭

Some have suggested that because we have computers and calculators, people no longer need basic skills. Others say that we need all the skills we ever needed and computers can be used to teach those skills. Still others believe that technology must be withheld from students so they will learn the important basic skills. I believe that advanced technology requires us to know more and different mathematics. Computers can arrive at completely fallacious results if improper assumptions are used
in programming them. Insurance agents, car dealers, banks, and others have been known to use specially programmed computers to beguile customers.
Computers and even calculators can produce mathematical nonsense at a much faster rate than people have ever been able to do in the past.
Educated people must understand sufficient mathematics to be able to
recognize absurd mathematical statements and understand that mathematical statements generated by computer are no more likely to be valid than those coming from a human being. We must teach people not to think of technology as an authority figure. Without mathematical understanding people of the twenty-first century will be victims of computer mysticism.

So many things! 1. There are 9-12 teachers doing this work 👋 2. A lot of modernizing involves what was laid out in the 80s and 90s. That is, relevant math and numerical computing platforms were highlighted & introduced then. 3. Chatbots are unrelated to modernizing mathematics education.

It struck me is that we have talked about Galton, Fisher, Pearson --> Hitler, Watson (IBM), WW2 --> Turing and Enigma, Turing and AI --> IBM and Watson (computer) --> current tech bros & TESCREAL. Tech history is so instructive and insightful. History offers so much benefit to technical curricula.

Back in my day, I was told not to continue in education because math teachers would go extinct thanks to "machine learning" (~2009) 🤷 Also apparently teachers were supposed to have transitioned to "prompt engineers" by 2023?
