@bcantrill.bsky.social referring to an AI-generated image of a factory as “Dickensian Richard Scary” at #Monktoberfest is sending me. Rebecca Solnit was the quote de jour yesterday (3x). Will Richard Scarry be today’s?!?

Talking version control & comparing code control to OneDrive, @jdc.pub hits upon a nerve. Been trying to get people to use document mgmt & version control for decades The web broke good document mgmt. DM was built into Word & other tools in the 90s UNTIL tech provided a "better" way. #Monktoberfest

Anthropic may not have intended to write an excellent ad for GLM 5.3, but that's what they did. www.anthropic.com/research/glm... Unlike Mythos, I might actually have a chance at using GLM for defensive research. Anthropic didn't reply to any of my requests for Mythos access for use on OpenSSH.

GLM-5.3 and the spread of advanced cyber capabilities
GLM-5.3 can autonomously build end-to-end cyber exploits, but unlike other frontier models, it was released without meaningful safeguards to limit misuse.

Are you disagreeing with the “just about anyone” phrase? These models are really cheap, I don’t use models for cyber tasks but those statements sound correct to me. If you want to do something malicious, you can coax the models to do it very cheaply, no?

Hm I’ll think more about it. I read the post more as “this technology is crossing a cost threshold and we need to harden infrastructure quickly” and not as “open weight models are a problem and should be restricted”

This is a slightly different effect, but so many scientists & engineers have convinced themselves that they can solve non-technical research problems (e.g. philosophy, public policy) by thinking hard from first principles. Turns out, experts in all those other fields are really, really smart too!

Staged next steps, in priority order:

1. Ask Carpinelli directly. He is active and reachable on
Bluesky (@loopy.codes) and LinkedIn (in/joeycarp). Because he is the author, he can (a) confirm whether the .jl notebook still exists in any local backup, private repo, or branch, and (b) possibly still have a screenshot of the tweet. This is by far the highest-probability path to recovering the actual script and tweet text.

More than anything, I think we’d benefit a lot from storing ALL project information in one data model. I think provenance and signed attestations will be more important as time goes by, and having one VCS makes that easier for compatibility and distribution.

I’ve been really surprised with how far you can take Git’s data model past traditional text tracking. I hope to share more in October, after my (unrelated) Monktoberfest talk. For now, I stand by pinned reposts in git-ents. Unpinned repos are experimental slop unfit for human consumption.

I’ve been thinking about this too, and because I don’t want to write my own database, I’ve been exploring Git as a generic lazy CAS. Modern features get you really close, and for data that isn’t deeply nested the performance is well within an order of magnitude of other databases.

build seems to be an area ripe for total disruption in this space. imagine a Bazel-like where all components are distributed, mesh-based global caching, worktree oriented, agentic integration - that would've been an intimidating years long buildout. now it seems approachable for a small team

Went from max to pro in August, and I just canceled my pro subscription today. For what I need (in open-source mostly-experimental projects) commoditized models à la OpenRouter are just fine, and have some minor data retention / privacy benefits.

Two proposals were offered to me. The first was that we post our Euler result, and that OpenAI post its Navier-Stokes result the next day. The second was that, after posting Euler, I alone write a paper presenting the Navier-Stokes result, acknowledging that an internal OpenAI model had resolved it. Sebastien twice asserted that he wanted Levent removed from authorship, and said it would all be simple if only it were not the case that, and it was so annoying that, Levent works at Anthropic. It was also said that if OpenAI posted after us, they would say that we deserved the Clay Prize, and that we were the "closest humans to the problem". I declined both offers.
I said that if OpenAI released its result in the way proposed I would go public with what happened. The reply was, "Why would you ruin your career?" I replied that I am an academic, and asked why he thought going public would ruin my career. The reply was,
"If you don't want me to be nice, then I don't
have to be nice."

one time i needed a safe multi-producer, single-consumer work queue in C++. i found exactly ONE library that did it properly. it was used by 12 projects. in rust the right way is built into std::sync. thousands of crates and apps in rust do it the right way. that day i switched permanently to rust

Or, rather, they exploited a hole in the package registry, if I understand correctly. Same difference. They shouldn’t need network at all for getting packages. Air gaps exist. I must be missing something?

re: OpenAI accidentally hacking Hugging Face The models exploited a hole in their proxy to access a software package registry, but like, they literally bought Astral and have been making moves in other package registry spaces IIRC. Could they not have just forked the full registry internally?
