They mostly used climate information (CI) to decide on concrete heat adaptation actions or to generally understand changing heat risks. Only a few used CI to justify past or planned heat adaptation decisions. Some even regarded using (more) CI as irrelevant for their heat adaptation action.

New paper: "Climate information use and needs for urban heat adaptation in Hamburg and Barcelona"🎉 Two years ago I got some scepticism when I said I was studying heat adaptation in Hamburg. After this summer, the sceptics are convinced. We interviewed 42 heat adaptation stakeholders in HH and BCN.

Psychological and behavioral research should also focus more on interventions to empower people to adapt to climate change, also considering climate justice aspects and the risk of maladaptation. My PhD journey is coming to an end soon, but I hope to keep contributing to this work wherever I land.

How accurately do people estimate climate hazards? When do they support adaptation? Why do they use early warning apps (or not)? And how do extreme weather experiences shape risk perceptions and policy support? These questions will (unfortunately) only grow in importance in the coming years.

A packed room for our panel on "People’s understanding of and response to extreme weather events" at #DGPs2026! Great psychological and behavioral research focuses on pro-environmental behavior and climate change mitigation. Our symposium complemented this with interdisciplinary views on adaptation

I think it is incredibly important to not just look at statistics, but to also remember the stories of the people behind the statistics. For German speakers, I highly recommend the ARD-podcast series “Die Flut – Warum musste Johanna sterben?”.

4) For those who identified with the AfD in 2022, climate risk perceptions and the perceived importance of protection from climate change even decreased.

3) Climate risk perceptions and the perceived importance of protection from climate change did not increase, not even among those who experienced the 2021 flood.

We found that: 1) Personal and general flood risk perceptions increased, but not for people who identified with the climate-sceptical party “Alternative for Germany” (AfD) in 2022.

People also misestimate how much these frequencies are changing due to climate change. I am grateful for the helpful feedback that we received on my presentation of these results at #ICAP2026. We are finishing the respective paper right now. Stay tuned!

In 2024 and 2025, a spring drought hit Northern Germany, an extreme rainfall event led to severe flooding in Southern Germany, and a heatwave affected all of Germany. We find that people misestimate how frequently such events occur in the current climate with around 1.3°C of global warming.

The London Ambulance Service responded to the highest number of life-threatening emergencies in its history on Wednesday.

Temperatures soared to 36.1C in parts of the UK on Wednesday, and that record for June has been broken again today.

Ambulance crews responded to 642 calls relating to category 1 incidents - those that include the most serious, life-threatening injuries and illnesses such as cardiac arrests and patients who are not breathing.

Chief Executive Jason Killens KAM said this was "driven by the extreme heat across London".

Leaders around the world are banking on tech advances to solve climate change. One leading idea involves capturing carbon pollution from the air and then burying it underground forever. It sounds practical. Here’s why there's no conceivable way it can work: (THREAD)

We often say this heat wave is a glimpse of our future. That's true, but it's only part of the story. Conditions like these will become more common, but even more intense heat waves will then emerge, with worsening impacts on people and ecosystems. Graphic from climate.copernicus.eu/esotc/2025/t...
Graphic showing heat stress days are increasing while cold stress days decline in Europe for a few metrics. This is for the average number of heat stress days, tropical nights, and cold stress days in Europe from the WMO RA VI since 1980.

Compared to other European countries France is okayish prepared. They learned important lessons in 2003 and started to adapt. Other countries look at France for best practice examples. That said, there is only so much one can do and it will not be enough, particularly with escalating climate change

📈Why is there is upward trend in billion-dollar disasters? 1. There is a growing number of people, homes, and businesses exposed to these hazards. 2. Climate change is causing an increase in frequency and intensity of certain types of extreme weather. That's a bad combo.

Qianjiadong Reservoir in southern Hunan, China, produces a double harvest: solar energy and yellow carp. The solar farm produces up to 80 megawatts of power while the fish forage beneath the panels. With a massive scale-up of solar and wind at home and cheap exports of the technology, China is driving a worldwide surge of renewable energy—Science’s 2025 Breakthrough of the Year.
