Thanks for this—really helpful! Could you expand a bit on the borrowing of Aramaic š as either š or s in Arabic place names. What exactly is being posited here, and when?

Well this is a first. I just received an e-mail asking me for permission to be included as a co-author of an article. An article whose existence I had not heard of up until that e-mail. The person did not wait for my reply with permission and submitted it to a journal with my name attached!

Just read a new paper by @safaitic.bsky.social, "Pre-Arabic: a toponymic conspectus" by Ahmad Al Jallad, and it struck me Never really thought about the remnants of Pre-Arabic lingering in the toponyms of Arabic but here we are It could make well for someone's PHD thesis honestly

Today at NACAL there was a fantastic talk by Massinissa Garaoun on pre-Hispanic toponomy in the Canary Islands. Based on extensive fieldwork, checking pronuniations and the topographical features the terms are connected to, he showed that there are many toponyms that are clearly...

Very sad to learn of the death of a friend - one of the wisest and most encouraging speakers of Baghdadi Judeo-Arabic I’ve had the luck to learn from. A loss for loved ones and for all who will never be lucky enough to hear the wisdom my friend imparted.

Thank you to everyone who has sent in submissions to the next IASA Bulletin. Due to unforeseen circumstances we are extending the deadline from 2nd to 9th October, so it's not late to spread the word to friends and colleagues if you have not already done so. 😁
