The GOP is the party of drunk driving. The newspapers of record have taken the position that if the GOP favors drunk driving, it must be presented as a serious alternative to driving sober. This is how a civilization drives into the wall.

Those making excuses for Google on the naming of international bodies of water are still reckoning with the denial phase of grief. GNIS ought to be an apolitical reference, but it no longer is. We didn't expect to lose such things, but we have. To pretend we have not is to enable corruption.

ICE is engaged in a very large escalation nationwide, with the agency claiming to be hitting record arrest numbers amid the return of quotas. This has gotten very little attention from the media because ICE learned lessons from the chaotic disasters of Kristi Noem’s tenure. Keep a watch.

"The Emperor's New Clothes" is a key document for understanding this period of US History. No matter how many times Trump shows his ass, the courtiers at the Times and elsewhere empty the thesaurus to describe the stitching of his breeches.

Bluesky is a very good thing. Would it be better if it were bigger? Sure. But it can't be helped that the way power is structured in the world allowed a particularly awful person to take over the place that was bigger and remake it in his own image.

One of the most clarifying passages I've ever read on what "polarization" actually means in the U.S."
Excerpt from the book How Democracies Die.

"America's democratic norms, then, were born in a context of exclusion. As long as the political community was restricted largely to whites, Democrats and Republicans had much in common. Neither party was likely to view the other as an existential threat. The process of racial inclusion that began after World War II and culminated in the 1964 Civil Rights Act and 1965 Voting Rights Act would, at long last, fully democratization the United States. But it would also polarized it, posing the greatest challenge to established forms of mutual tolerating and forbearance since Reconstruction."

I read journalists debating details of WHCA security, and I am reminded of the obsessive attention to tactics in discussions of the American Civil War, which is to say, ostensibly talking about something, but really creating a diversion to avoid addressing what actually matters.

“the great story of our time” indeed Piercing thoughts from Michael Wood on the war with Iran michaelwood627.substack.com/p/iran-thoug...
1-The republic truly is dead. The American republic, I mean. Since election night 2024, I have seen clearly that the man who sent a mob to attack the first branch of government would govern like a king, and I was right. I've written this type of thing so many times and said it in person to so many people but, I'm sorry, it's the great story of our time: for all intents and purposes, we live under an elected (for now) monarch who makes tax, spending, and war decisions on his own by executive fiat and completely disregards Congress because he feels confident that no one will hold him to
account.

The Republican Party has abandoned any semblance of allegiance to the constitution or the people. They could stop this farce today. Even in an overt monarchy, only slobbering sycophants would allow a mad king to loot his subjects like this.

I would argue that the case for dismantling ICE has, at this point, virtually nothing to do with larger questions of immigration enforcement and reform, it's just clearly incompatible with a free and democratic society to maintain a secret police force with sweeping and arbitrary authority.

It will be hard for people in the future to understand the stupidity that rules the moment. They will look for reasons, but this is not a time of reason. Those in the positions of greatest influence are malicious and corrupt or in the perennial business of apologizing for power.

Why were a small number of people with patently bad intentions allowed to do so much damage? It wasn't long ago that such people were correctly excluded from respectable discourse. Hopefully the remaining free societies learn from this example.
