This week's Monday snippet comes from my cozy-spooky novella A Honeymoon of Grave Consequence: books2read.com/honeymoonGrave #romancelandia
The illustrated cover for A Honeymoon of Grave Consequence, by Stephanie Burgis, shows the silhouette of an elegant traveling carriage over the title and a bat with wings outstretched underneath, all of it framed by apples and with mirrors at the top and the bottom of the image. Above and beside the cover is this snippet of text: “Those absurd courtiers were all hoping for scandal and titillation,” Margaret said. “I was only documenting scientific facts, with accurate historical documents and explanations!”
“Of course. No more than scientific facts, exact descriptions, and thorough historical context...around the intoxicating pleasures experienced with a vampiric lover’s bite. What could possibly be more high-minded and academic?” Lord Riven’s voice deepened; he shifted his grip downwards to rub both of his thumbs in maddeningly soft caresses against the soft hollows of her neck, and she arched like a cat in instinctive response, barely holding back a purr. “Believe me, I will never forget the process of assisting you in your research.”

got a lovely review in Locus of my @apexmag.bsky.social story "Unsettled Nature."
Two of the original stories in Apex 152 stood out for me. Jordan Kurella's "Unsettled Nature" is a mystery set in an "un-natural place" where a jackalope rider is found dead. The narrator, who finds the body and subsequent victims, is immediately suspected. Meanwhile their jackalope is having violent nightmares, then takes ill. Obviously, we're in a strange world, one the author does an excellent job of hinting at well enough in less than 6000 words to satisfy.
Similarly, he sketches just enough of the characters to tell this curious story well.

Cover of Locus Magazine’s June issue next to a review that reads:

"Time Management", P.A. Cornell (Lightspeed 4/26)
-Maria Haskins
For a delightful pick-me-up, Lightspeed brings "Time Management" by P.A. Cornell, where Gwen wakes up one morning with the ability to manipulate time. She realizes that she has this new power during a morning conversation with her brother Kyle, who she talks to using ASL, and the "ASL for 'story' was so similar to the pulling motion necessary to stretch time." Gwen aims to use her ability to make good moments last and bad moments pass more quickly, and the story has a gentle, life-affirming warmth to it that feels wonderfully healing.

Oh hey, my fantasy rom-com Wooing the Witch Queen is a Kindle Daily Deal in North America today - and better yet, other retailers are price-matching, too! Snap it up now: us.macmillan.com/books/978125... #romancelandia
An image of the North American front cover of Wooing the Witch Queen shows a sinister witch queen in a spectacular beaded dress embracing her handsome and adoring new librarian (in a black wizard's robe) inside a library of magic filled with crows and masks and flying books. The tagline reads: Love can be a witch. A blurb from Sarah Beth Durst (New York Times bestselling author of The Spellshop) reads: “Full of charm, wit, and magic… I loved it!”
Around the image, against a starry night background, are various pieces of text connected to it by arrows. They read: “bi villainous heroine,” “sweet cinnamon-roll hero with a fake identity,” “crow friends,” “found family,” and “flirting with fountain pens.” At the bottom of the image are the words: On sale for $2.99!

The British cover for Enchanting the Fae Queen, by Stephanie Burgis, shows a green background with a frame of climbing roses and branches rising through a night sky full of stars. In the center of the image, just beneath the moon, stands a massive, ominous castle with a hedge maze before it. A blonde woman in a long gown scattters sparkles in her wake as she leads her tall. uniformed male companion through the moonlit hedge maze at a run, while giant butterflies flutter overhead. The tag line reads: “All’s fae in love and war” and a blurb from Sarah Beth Durst reads: “Full of charm, wit and magic.”
Around and beneath the cover image is this text, connected by arrows to different parts of the cover image: She's a scandalous seductress; he's famously moral, virtuous and chaste; “Yes, I may kill him, but I’ll kill anyone else who tries”; Enemies to lovers; only 99p this April.

This promo image for the OwlCrate limited edition of Enchanting the Fae Queen shows the first side side of the reversible dust jacket. Against a vividly pink background, flowers blossom and a small brown bird perches in a bush beneath a glittering tiara. The painted edges of the book show falling leaves and a tent made out of cobwebs. On the back cover of the dustjacket, being read by the bird, is a note that reads: Make it matter. This promo image for the OwlCrate limited edition of Enchanting the Fae Queen shows the second side of the reversible dust jacket. This time, Lorelei and Gerard are pictured together in luscious painted detail. The front cover shows her standing in the front opening of a large cobweb-silk tent, looking down on his kneeling figure with one hand under his chin, offering him a sword. On the back cover, they're kissing passionately against a woodland background.
This promo image for the OwlCrate limited edition of Enchanting the Fae Queen shows the foiled hardcover case. Against a pale pink background, illustrated swords, birds, chains of roses, and a crown surround the title of the book on the front cover. The same framing illustration is on the back cover, but this time it surrounds a snippet from the book: “I may be a mere mortal, but I do not break my vows.”

In honor of the winter solstice, this week's Sunday snippet comes from my frothy romantasy novella Snowspelled, which is set at a Winter Solstice house party in an alt-19th century England (ruled by the Boudiccate). It's available in ebook & paperback now: books2read.com/snowspelled #romancelandia
The cover of Snowspelled, by Stephanie Burgis, shows a young woman in Regency-style clothing under a long and gorgeous coat holding a lantern amidst swirling, magical snow. Above and around that cover image is this snippet from the book:
There were shadows under his eyes now that I hadn’t seen two months ago. His light brown cheeks, still dusted with dark stubble from his journey, looked disconcertingly hollow.
But I would not worry about him. I would not.
Instead I looked pointedly from his tangled hair to the branch that lay at his feet. “You were in too much of a hurry to protect Lady Cosgrave’s hedges? Not very well-mannered for a houseguest.”
He arched one dark eyebrow, his narrow lips quirking into a half-smile. “And you’re worrying about propriety now? You really have changed, Harwood.”
The familiar name ran like a knife beneath my ribs, making me suck in a breath. “Miss Harwood,” I said icily, “if we’re worrying about propriety. We’re no longer affianced, if you recall.”
“Oddly enough,” said Wrexham, “I have no difficulty at all in remembering that small detail.”

BEEP BEEP BEEP WE HAVE A COVER
Cover of the book IGNORE ALL PREVIOUS INSTRUCTIONS by Ada Hoffmann. The title is written in bright, colorful block letters and the author's name is below it in a handwriting-like font. A tiny robot peeks out from the "S" at the end of "Instructions." Below the title and author there is a cartoon depiction of the planet Jupiter, against a starry background, with a cartoon spaceship flying up from it. There is a small Jolly Roger flag on the spaceship.

I published some pieces I'm deeply proud of this year. My second novel, one of my most personal novelettes, one of my weirdest short stories, and an essay on an idea that's been nagging me for years.

the cover of THE DEATH OF MOUNTAINS is off to the left of this image. the rest of it is text on a dark blue background.

it says:

ELIGIBLE FOR:
the Nebula, the Hugo, the Locus, and other novella etcetera
LISTEN:
if you want to think of this book during awards season? great! thank you very much! are there too many things to think about right now? of course there are. way too many things. i am making this graphic while also internally screaming and procrastinating dinner. so. i get it.

I didn’t realized this had gone live but it seems that you can now read my flash, “What Happened That Night,” at Short Edition. short-edition.com/en/story/sho...

What Happened That Night
Josh is gone, but I see him everywhere. Even now, it's his reflection I see in the puddle as the storm brings me back to reality. I shiver. Seems I'm always cold these days. I need to get my shit

Back at the office today after #AFF is such a Crash, I’m exhausted but all I want to do is go home and write, I want to ping all the new people I met and ask them what what ideas have taken hold. I was feeling so down on writing coming into Austin, now I have hope, energy #scriptsky

Hey folks! I know people are stretched a little thin right now but I wanted to boost this fundraiser for @siwc.bsky.social -- which as some may know cancelled this year so as to avoid crossing the picket line for the con hotel staff. (But now they are broke!) Shares appreciated!

I recently received a note that my characters sound too much alike. What are yall’s strategies for voice in dialogue? Especially if you have several people with similar jobs/backgrounds. #scriptsky #scriptwriting
