Three years ago, we left Omaha. It turned into a story about forced migration, queer fear and resilience, and the shittiness of breaking your foot while you’re trying to move. I am very grateful that Minnesota welcomed us. This story has a happy ending. reactormag.com/this-is-not-...

Sometimes I read through those spam emails that are doing a "deep analysis" of my themes in Lighthouse or First Bright Thing. Because as a professor, good LORD AI is bad at this. It is like nails on a chalkboard, but reminds me that robots have limits. Like understanding a metaphor.

It’s neat that we live in a world of almost endless beauty and wonder, and it’s even neater that the very best view can be found in my living room.
A black and white dog on a green couch, taken at an angle that shows him basically trying to climb inside my skin. He has his paws wrapped around my arm, and I’m cradling the side of his head. He looks very serious.

I love learning about people’s hyperfixations. The more niche and involved the better. A movie no one’s heard of from 1996? A specific type of stamp? One dude who changed the way we wrap candy in the 1800s? Please tell me your most specific obsession and info dump on me.

First, MASSIVE congratulations to Thomas Ha for his Hugo win. His short story, “In My Country,” is FANTASTIC and one of my favorite stories of 2025. I wanted to finally share my rebel loon dress for the awards ceremony. Necklace is @midnightxartist . And the speech explaining why this dress.
A pretty blue mockingjay dress with red boots and blue hair Wow. Thank you. This is a literal dream come true. I wrote this story because I wanted to see how I fit into the world, and give myself permission to show up as myself. The fact that so many people resonated with that journey, found themselves in Liz, it goes to show how none of us are alone, even if we feel like it. All of us are worthy. All of us are enough.
Thank you first and foremost to my beautiful wife, Jessie. To my parents and my grandma and my sweet sweet dog Paddington, and thank you to Uncanny Magazine for believing so much in this story. Thank you to my agent, Stevie Finegan. Thank you to the speculative fiction community, especially the queer and disabled readers and writers who have lifted not only me but all of us up. A special thank you to Ryka, John, and Effie, for your kindness and your friendship and lyour stubborn belief that I could do this. To all the other short story nominees, for writing such beautiful work that was needed in this time of all the fears and scars and pains that they wrote about, AI, ableism, fascism, apocalypse, identity.
And I don’t think it’s a coincidence that all the stories this year were strong meditations on the uncertain times we live in. We need to understand and to talk about and to act on the horrors surrounding us. Tonight, I’m dressed as the rebel loon symbol to represent my city of Minneapolis. In the past year, there have been terrible things, lives ripped apart, and it’s still going on as we sit in this arena tonight.
A few days ago, someone at the convention asked me, “Do you think there’s hope?”
And yes, I do. Because there has to be. And because we as a community are desperately writing about it. Keep writing. Keep hoping. As one of my favorite authors, Suzanne Collins, wrote, “Hope, it is the only thing stronger than fear. A little hope is effective. A lot of hope is dangerous.”

Picture of pad and lighthouse. We did it buddy we won a Goldie Thank you so much for this honor, and I am so sorry I couldn't be here tonight. Unfortunately, this summer, one of its dearest characters, Gurty, crossed the rainbow bridge, and I am holding my family tight as we navigate the big life experience of grief. Gurty's name in real life was Paddington, and he was a very kind, very loving, very good boy, and I am more than grateful that those who read this book know him and his heart. He taught me how to give of myself and love life, even when things look dark. I dedicate this award to him, my sweet boy, my little guardian. Dogs are on both sides.
