RIP. My mother worked on her team at MIT on the Apollo Project. We had some of those books, like the ones stacked in the photo, in my parents' basement when I was a kid, and I used to like going through them and seeing how much I could follow (not much) and finding the pages with my mom's name.

after today's ride, I'm pretty sure the bike I've ridden for the last ten years was too big for me. if you ride bikes and you're feeling like your ride is slow or less fun, it's worth it to look around and try some different ones. fb marketplace might work as well as your local bike shop.
a custom build I've been slowly working on since February. Soma Doublecross frame, 650bx48 tires, 160mm cranks, and a 2x10 microshift drivetrain running 46-30 in the front. so fun!!

RIP to Annie Dillard, simply the greatest of all time, in whose inimitable style I try and fail to fashion myself, a beacon, a mystic, something like a god! PILGRIM has been on my nightstand as I write my new book (for which she is my epigraph). too many astonishing passages, but here is just one:
Parasitism: this itch, this gasp in the lung, this coiled worm in the gut, hatching eggs in the sinew, warble-hole in the hide—is a sort of rent, paid by all creatures who live in the real world with us now. It is not an extortionary rent: Woulnd't you pay it, don't you, a little blood from the throat and wrists for the taste of the air? Ask the turtle. True, for some creatures it is a slow death; for others, like the stylopsised bee, it is a strange, transfigured life. For most of us Western humans directly it is a pinprick or scabrous itch here and there from a world we learned early could pinch, and no surprise. Or it is the black burgeoning of disease, the dank baptismal lagoon into which we are dipped by blind chance many times over against our wishes, until one way or another we die. Chomp. It is the thorn in the flesh of the world, another sign, if any be needed, that the world is actual and fringed, pierced here and there, and through and through, with the toothed conditions of time and the mysterious, coiled spring of death.

One of the things I know about writing is this: spend it all, shoot it, play it, lose it, all, right away, every time. Do not hoard what seems good for a later place in the book or for another book; give it, give it all, give it now. The impulse to save something good for a better place later is the signal to spend it now. Something more will arise for later, something better. These things fill from behind, from beneath, like well water. Similarly, the impulse to keep to yourself what you have learned is not only shameful, it is destructive. Anything you do not give freely and abundantly becomes lost to you. You open your safe and find ashes.

I'm starting to get the distinct impression that for childless people over forty, the second half of life is one long existential crisis, by definition. At this point, "crisis" even seems a little hyperbolic. This is just normal, trying to keep myself interested in the "civilization experiment."

But forced social media assignments are just the beginning. As part of the bootcamp, students are also required to pass an eyebrow-raising heart rate challenge, in which they’re hooked up to live monitors in front of their classmates and presented with a pre-recorded video of their parents berating them.

“The challenge rule was simple,” one student wrote: “my resting heart rate was 80bpm, and I had to stay within 10 percent of that the whole time. Anything above 88 was a fail.”
