In between lie a great variety of relational patterns. The only way we have to differentiate them right now is vibes. I mention above the pre-existing norm. I think it’s out of date, and that we need to negotiate a new one that reflects the various capabilities of the agents we have today.

Not just impeachable. Impeachment, both pres. and agency heads, is the only option. It's impeachment or nothing. Courts won't stop it. Other tools are impotent. Put them on trial the only way you can. Even if you can't get 2/3, use process as punishment. Make it miserable and costly. It can be done.

Jamie Raskin calls out the shitty ads as a crime (this was cited by CNN and other stories). This is the kind of Xitter post that I beg of @raskin.house.gov or other MoCs to cross-post over here -- not least bc more people over here are likely to magnify it.
Rep. Jamie Raskin

This may be felony criminal theft and conversion of government property for political campaign purposes. 18 U.S.C. § 1641. It is a Hatch Act violation for any government employees who worked on it or used government resources to make it. It is blatantly unethical under numerous federal ethics provisions proscribing the use of government resources for political campaigns.

It looks and sounds like a political spot and includes a disclaimer stating that it is paid for by the U.S. government.

issues with that: - why is the game's difficulty curve balanced around random encounters thus requiring random encounters? Isn't that circular reasoning? - why does removing from player any agency about when combat happen feel bad? - why are low level encounters in most games mindless annoyance?

yes, i am saying this. literally this. i am saying that you should not care about water for 16,000 people when "growing alfalfa for export in deserts with approximately zero precipitation" is literally orders of magnitude more water and vastly more pointless.

what i am trying to get at here is that rationalism was an attempt to outline what turned out to be the extraordinary power of statistical systems at tasks for which they naively seem unsuited. viewed from 2011 they seem to have been prophetic, but were wrong on most details and insane about others

This makes me hopeful. This number is aspirational but nowhere near out of reach: a working professional could realistically cash out their 401k and buy off a public official. Owning a senator is more attainable for most Americans than home ownership.

the AI community on Bluesky overwhelmingly engages with people *not* on the basis of their feelings, but with how correct or incorrect their assertions are! we are frustrated by how peoples’ emotions lead them to bury their heads in the sand, to believe misinformation, and to harass others
You would not BELIEVE how badly a certain type of person who has made LLM enthusiasm their entire personality needs everyone they encounter to have identical feelings

We live in an era of denial about what has happened to US politics. Many STILL operate under the assumption that we buried open white supremacy six feet under after 1965. Most likely that's because, if they admitted otherwise, they'd have to own at least a decade of misguided lib/left punching.

Lived through this (central Virginia mid 90s). Institutional position was that the disruptors were assets in two ways: one, that they would keep smart kids from getting smarter (risk management); two, by surfacing kids capable of manipulating and deploying their chaos (group management).

reposting this article is cognitive surrender. this drives me insane. the headline is a deliberate lie. the report doesn’t “find” anything: the below is all the it has to say on the topic. the footnote is just a link to this Wharton study osf.io/preprints/ps...
Getting the right answer from a chatbot can create the illusion of learning – but it can also trigger “cognitive surrender”4, where students fall back on AI at the first hint of struggle. In a recent paper5, three noted MIT economists – Daron Acemoglu, David Autor and Simon Johnson – argue for what they call “pro-worker AI.” They make the case that instead of designing AI systems to replace workers, businesses should develop AI that allows human beings “to be more effective at their existing tasks, tackle new tasks, and acquire new expertise.”

Yeah... so the thing is, "people with lots of resources viewing rural areas as An Escapism Venue" is a HUGE PROBLEM. Imagine being a farm worker trying to save up enough to buy their own land & go into business for themselves. But you're competing with people who can pay $3K/month for a shoebox.

there is where discipline comes into play: despite your position on various things changing over time as you receive new information (for example, people on the left 20 years ago weren’t as widely pro-gun as they are now!), you have to start with a concrete set of values that ground you.

The one thing I'm 100% sure of is that we're in a new Y2K situation, and if "nothing happens", it'll be due to the combined efforts of many people fixing things in time, who will then spend decades having to listen to people telling them the whole thing was totally overblown.

This is a very good point and the thing to understand is that’s not what’s happening on either side. The republicans are identifying all the people they want to target for degradation and a repeal of their civil rights. The democrats are giving a list of who they’re okay to do that to.
