this is like the literal opposite of true. the most fruitful eras of the modern democratic party coincided with periods where the walls separating political radicals from the mainstream were way less solid

The three positions that the academic Left has successfully mainstreamed esp among young people are (1) American society is structurally racist; (2) gender is constructed, not natural; (3) Palestinians are humans. All three threaten the ideological core of American liberal-centrism.

DC area, tho I could drive a bit to drop the cats off if someone could take them.

1985-2023, loss of wetlands added “up to about a $10 billion increase in flood insurance claims (nationwide). In Charleston, along the lower Ashley River, the destruction of upstream wetlands has resulted in the loss of about $20.7 million in flood damage reduction since the 1980s.”

very much of the view that a democratic congress should wield the guarantee clause against ad hoc, mid-decade redistricting, a practice which is an end run against representative government itself

A college education isn't about getting a job, it's about learning enough about yourself, the world around you, and the process of learning to be able to find a vocation and a passion and also a first job, while knowing it won't be the last.

My preferred AI metaphor is actually Asbestos. - Seemingly magical properties - Developed and experimented with to make endless products - Poisoned countless communities in it's creation - Everything it was used for eventually becomes a toxic hazard to mitigate & it's in the fucking walls now

You've probably been wondering: "How many eels is a cottage worth in 14th C. England?" This is a reasonable question. I get it. And happily, I'm here to help! I included a chart showing this kind of equivalence in an article I wrote for HistoryExtra , but here's an excerpt! 🗃️🧪
Table showing cost of items in the 14th C., and the equivalent value in eels. The table has 3 columns: "You want to buy", "It Costs", and "But in eels?" The table shows you that:

2 doz. eggs costs 1d, or 6 eels
A gallon of the best ale costs 1.25d or 8 eels
1 sheep costs 1s 5d, or 106 eels
1 cow costs 9s 5d, or 706 eels
A 2-story cottage costs £2, or 3,000 eels

The d. here means penny, from the latin "denarius." There were 12 d. to a shilling (s), and 20 shillings to a pound (£).

As far as I know, no one was buying cottages with eels. This is more to give you a sense of relative costs. But wouldn't it be interesting if you could buy a house with eels?

This chart leaves unanswered the question: "What about the next-best ale?" and suggests and entire spectrum of ale gradations. Which makes good sense, of course. But also, you certainly wouldn't want to spend your eels on inferior ale!

160+ years and we're still talking about reparations. But what if I told you reparations were given? On April 16, 1862, President Lincoln signed the Compensated Emancipation Act. Except D.C. slaveholders got reparations for EACH freed slave. Up to $300 which is roughly $11,000 in today's money

As a union leader what you should be doing is defending your teachers’ labor from the obvious attempts to encroach and automate. GAI in education is (among other things) a labor issue (even if it has limited use cases) This is the union failing to do its job.

Honestly, I am absolutely disgusted by academics suggesting that AI can do the reading and writing for you. At a certain point, what you're bragging about is fraud. And in a broader sense, what you're contributing to is the erosion of knowledge and the destruction of trust in academic publishing.
