Was ist denn hier los?

I still feel like people should quote Box (1978) instead of the other one. As I understand it, he is basically saying that “Is the model true?” is the wrong question. Therefore, the statement "all models are wrong" is the answer to a *question* that isn't useful.

Can LLMs Emulate Human Belief Dynamics? 🧪 The answer is a clear no. [The findings] raise a sharp warning against deploying LLMs as human proxies in social simulations. arxiv.org/pdf/2605.18781 #SyntheticData #EsWirdImmerAbsurder
Screenshot of the abstract of the preprint.

Can LLMs simulate how humans form and change beliefs in social net-
works? We put this to the test by replicating an established study on belief
dynamics, evaluating 12 LLMs across multiple model families and param-
eter sizes. The answer is a clear no, and in systematic ways. LLMs fail
to capture initial human belief distributions and tend to be overall more
conformist than humans, shifting their responses to align with those around
them. They also take a nuanced approach to emulating human homophilic
tendencies within networks. Our findings carry a double payoff: they
highlight fundamental properties of LLM behavior, and they raise a sharp
warning against deploying LLMs as human proxies in social simulations.

Clear and brief communication on a critical topic. If you care about ways of making social media better give this one a scan!
Text in image: "But even so, a ban does not empower youth. It confers no skills. It doesn’t cultivate resilience against online harms. It merely postpones the problem. The UK parliament will soon vote on whether to lower the voting age to 16, and so a ban is likely to introduce a dangerous cliff edge scenario in which teens who can now vote for the first time are also suddenly going online to get their news from social media. Moreover, proposed bans cover only certain social media. They don’t cover AI chatbots, which have been accused of encouraging some teen suicides. Although this calls for regulatory oversight, it is not feasible to ban all technology of the future — so what should be done instead?

Rather than hide from technology, we should face the challenges head on. The government should invest heavily in digital technology education at the national level, empowering youth to use digital technologies responsibly. Children as young as four years of age are developing an understanding of truth and falsity, and causal evidence supports the efficacy of digital media education in schools5. Just as operating a car requires a driving licence, in order to use social media safely, ‘social media passports’ could be introduced through gradual, controlled exposure to digital technology starting as early as primary school."
